How to cheat?
« on: August 04, 2013, 01:27:27 pm »

Hello,

I'm new to the forums. I'm playing DF for around three or four weeks now, had to restart uncountable times since then cause of FUN. But latly FUN just started to annoy me with all those random factors you cannot prepare for. With lots of playtime I still didn't saw my first goblin attack/siege yet.

Yet another recently started game starts to annoy me cause of a strange mood on a dwarf that needs shells which I don't have and don't know how to get some in time before he starts raging or whatever.

Well, I decided to use dfhack to solve this problem at this time. I saw the changeitem command, but don't know how to use it to change for example a piece of rock into the needed shell. So could someone help me on this one?

Or is there any other easy way to cheat some shells?

I'm playing on the latest version, 0.34.11 including LNP and dfhack.

Forget changeitem. 'k' over the mooded dwarf and in the dfhack terminal type, 'liquids' and hit enter.

Looks like some sort of a Plan B, not even a need for a coffin after. ;)

But actually I would prefer to give him some shells.

Some non-DFHack instruction on getting shell, just as cheaty but I don't know how to use DFHack. It also need something that's still alive and kicking to butcher, too.

Let the shell-loving dwarf go insane and die... there is no rule that says you must keep every single dwarf alive!

It doesn't matter if he dies, that's a part of the fun. I used to play this game in perfectionist-mode, basically save-scumming every time something went how it wasn't supposed to in my mind. But when I got past that, the game got so much better (and I enjoyed it immensely even before that). In what other game can you get killed by a grumpy wannabe-artisan?

But of course, getting through and overcoming all the FUN is even more enjoyable. I'd recommend that you try fishing, even if there's only ponds around. If you're lucky, your dwarves may catch some shell-bearing vermin. Then you just clean them and you've got yourself shells. If that doesn't work, post some militia near the workshop.

Thank you for your answers so far.

I think the thing with "perfectionist-mode" is what I'm currently hanging with. It works fine in most games, but in DF not, which makes me somewhat crazy. ;)

I decided to give it a go and watch what will happen. Don't have any military yet, planned to recruit from the second summer migrant wave, maybe the next mistake!? So I penned four war dogs at the workbench, ordered a coffin and started digging a burrial area.

Then I had another look in dwarf therapist and saw I had four dwarfes which I already gave some jobs without having the right workbenches up yet. I gave them all the three fisher labors and ordered two fisheries. And I can't believe it, they captured two pond turtles! :) Wouldn't have tried it without your answers, cause I try to avoid as much outdooring as possible normaly.

I'm somewhat happy now that I managed this mood without cheating. Thank you guys! :)

Congratulation :D

I usually just turn artifacts off because of bad experience with shell and yarn moods like that in waterless embarks.

An alternitive to military intervention if you know your going to loose a dwarf to a mood is to just wall him in.  I tend to design my layouts in such a way that its relitively easy to simply build 1 or 2 sections of wall to seal off a workshop just in case a mood goes wrong.   Depending on if you care about anything left inside or really need that space you could just slab him when he goes missing and leave him sealed in there to reduce bad thoughts if he was well liked.

There's no simple way to directly create shells using DFHack, but there's an alternative: use the "createitem" command to create a raw pond turtle ("createitem FISH_RAW POND_TURTLE:MALE"), then have one of your fish cleaners process it and you should get a shell.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I personally edited the raws in frustration. Cartilidge, scales, and one or two other things are now 'shell' to the raws.  Edit your raws, butcher up something (has to be new parts for it to work), and poof, instant shell replacements.

Supposedly your fey mood dwarfs should only request items that your fortress has been in possession of at one time.  Also, if you're using dfhack, it has a short and simple "job" command that shows you all the items needed by the dwarf. (Perhaps this is cheating, but if it is, then using the wiki is cheating, too).

That would be the "showmood" command.  Definitely makes managing moods easier, especially the ones who call for materials in arcane fashions.

Also, moody dwarves grab the items in the sequence of the showmood list.  The first item is the base material of the item, the material mentioned if/when the artifact is successfully created.  The rest are the basis for the decorations.

Moods last several game weeks.  You might get lucky and be able to buy the material off a caravan.  Caravans do carry shellfish.  A lot of us will buy a bin or two of cloth and leather in the early years just in case a mood strikes.  And sometimes you can build a workshop at the start of a mood and make the required material in time.

Caravan haven't brought shellfish in shellable form since 31.xx that I recalls. They brings cleaned turtle and lobster meat, though, just not shellable.

Unless I've missed something and everyone I've seen was unlucky?

If you choose the default Play Now then you will have at least one fisherdwarf and fish cleaner, which in most biomes, means more shells than you know what to do with.

If you don't do Play Now then you're on your own.
