"Why not just follow the river instead of crossing it?" you ask.

"Well, we'll be crossing at a ford, so we'll have to follow the river anyway, but we have to get heading East if we want to get where we're going," Hane answers, before gesturing at a bowl sitting next to him. "In the meantime, eat up."

Excusing yourself for a moment under the pretense of taking a look around, you go to investigate the river. It looks like clear water, and doesn't smell like anything out of the ordinary- it even sounds like a river.

That being said, though, the fact that you couldn't see any life in the river IS suspicious, so you decide to test it with your hand.

...

It's wet. Wet water.

Eat your fill, thank them for their hospitality, then move on alone. Go in search of the ford they mentioned.

What are we wearing?

Returning to the campfire, you sit down on a handy stump and pick up your bowl to grab a serving of the stew. As you sit down to eat, the others resume their conversation. You ignore it for the most part as you eat the unexpectedly good stew, but a word they mention catches your ear.

"...village may have moved by the time we get there," Tern says as you perk up.

"Village? You're going to a village?" you ask, doing your best to hide your excitement.

"Well, you weren't expecting us to wander the wilderness forever, were you?"

"No, but... Anyway, what is this village like? What's its name?"

"The inhabitants it Shadowvale, but most others know of it as just the wandering village. Nobody's really sure where the name came from, but we think it's from one of it's stopping points, maybe it's origin point.

Ask if you can travel with them to Shadowvale, and ask what they mean by the village having "moved".

"Can I come along with you?" you ask.

Hane takes a look around at his companions, who nod in the affirmative. "Okay then, you're good. W'll strike out tomorrow morning before sunrise. We want to get an early start."

"Sounds good. Oh, and by the way, what exactly do you mean by the village 'moving'?"

"Well, we haven't been there to see it ourselves- nobody has, really- but from what we've heard it simply disappears, leaving only a sign with a location on it in it's place, and reappears somewhere else fro people to find. We've only heard about this from other travelers such as ourselves who've seen the village before, so it's really only hearsay, but as far as things go around here, that's pretty reliable."

See if I can tell if these fellows are armed. Whether or not we learn anything, bed down a short ways from their own camp. Sleep lightly.

Taking a look around the group and their campsite, you see no weapons, but neither do you see any gear at all, other than five bedrolls laying out on the ground and what they're cooking and eating with. Not even anything to carry gear. As you get up to head off to the outskirsts of camp to find a soft spot in the grass to sleep, Hane hands you a bedroll. "I'll get it in the morning," he says as you take the roll of blankets from him and set out for the edge of camp.

You wake to the rustling of movement in the camp. Getting up from your bedroll and stretching, you take a look around. The first light of the sun is just barely visible over the horizon to what is presumably the East, painting the tall prairie grass shades of the palest yellow. Your new companions are in camp below, burying the ashes of the campfire from last night. Rolling up your bedroll, you head on down into camp, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.

Help them pick up, then move out along with them.

You take a look around the campsite, seeing nothing but your companions standing around, looking at a map. Picking up your bedroll, you head on down to meet the group, and give it back to Hane. He takes it, and you turn your attention to the map. It's a very limited map, showing only the campsite and a few miles to either side, but they don't seem to care, paying attention to the ribbon of shading that is the river and the compass-rose in the top right corner of the map, with it's ornate lettering and arcane markings circling it. As you make room for yourself in the circle, you hear Hane talking, "-we'll avoid the forest and keep north of the falls. Are we good?"

The group nods as he turns to you. "Looks like you're ready to go as well," he says before shouting to the rest of the group, "Let's move! We still have to ford the river!"

The group marches on, leaving a spotless campsite behind.

Marching along the river, you take a look at the landscape around you. The same endless plain as you saw yesterday, with the clear river running through the expanse of grass to your left as you hike along. It takes you an hour, but eventually the group closes in on a part of the river with a big sandbar in the middle. Halting for a rest, you survey the sandbar. It would definitely make a good ford, marking a vastly more shallow portion of the river than the rest, which drops off to at least ten feet in the middle. The sand glitters slightly underneath the clear water, the specks of quartz and mica like stars within the silica. Laying back, you rest for a minute before standing with the rest of the group to cross.

Hane steps forward, motioning for Tern to accompany him. Slowly, the two step into the river, staying close. Slowly making their way across the river, they step carefully out onto the other bank, turning to watch the others cross. Viridana and June cross next without incident, leaving just you and Keran. Taking one last drink from your borrowed waterskin, you swallow and step into the river alongside Keran, feeling the cold of the water spread through your body, seeping into your bones as you wade through the thigh-deep water towards the other side.

Five feet from the shore, your foot comes down at a bad angle on the rivebed, and you lose traction, slipping forward. Luckily, the water's only calf-deep where you are, and you catch yourself, but the fall leaves you shaken. Slowly climbing to your feet, you quickly wade to the bank and clamber out of the water, to get back in the warmth of the sun, the group backing up to give you room to sit. Shivering from the cold water soaking through your shirt, you look up to see the tense stares of the group.

((Okay, I just want to continue the story now.))

You sit shivering on the riverbank, the group standing a short distance away from you. "Damn, that's cold," you day to nobody in particular.

"Indeed it is," replies Hane, staring off into the distance. "And you don't want to fall in for real."

"Sure, it's cold, but that bad?"

"Yeah," he replies, staring into space before snapping back to look at you. "But we better get a move on. Let's go."

You set off, the group quiet.

The plains are quiet around you as you walk. Nobody talks.
