(SG) Journey
« on: August 04, 2013, 12:08:45 pm »

It all starts with a death. You're not sure whose it was anymore- your own, somebody you knew, you're not sure. All you know is that now you're here, awake in the middle of a desolate plain.

But... What's your name? What should you do?

You were planning to have a 15 year old magical girl kill Witches by drinking them under the table!? It's original, at least.

Name... Name... You had one, once. You think you'll need one, though. Kirk will do. Kirk Perry. The name just drifts into your head alongside a wave of vague, cloudy thoughts. You try to capture them, to see if you can figure out where, let alone when, you are, but they drift away, slipping out of your grasp like water.

You look around you. The field you're stretches out in a wave of knee-high grass seemingly endlessly, not a tree in sight, let alone a landmark. The sky is a light blue and almost cloudless. The air feels damp, as if a rain had just passed through the endless fields. Seeing as how there's not a landmark in sight, you pick a direction that feels right and start walking, heading across the gently rolling plain.

After what feels like an hour of walking, you see a line glimmering in the distance- what seems to be a river on closer inspection. You approach the river, surveying the banks as you stop to rest. It's a good hundred feet wide, and deep- the water is crystal clear, and you can feel a cool breeze drifting off the surface as you sit, letting out a relaxed sigh as you take a seat on the sandy, gently sloping bank. Still, though, something doesn't quite feel right about the image in front of you.

It takes you a minute to figure it out, but you finally realize what it is- despite the crystal-clear water and the smooth slopes of the riverbed, you can't see any fish or other living things in the river- you can't even hear any insects in the air. Strange.

Watch out for encroaching evil. If none found, follow the river downstream. If there is a stream - it might just be a cleverly-disguised lake, like one of those lakes that form when a meandering curve of the river is cut off when a shorter path forms through water erosion.

You stand and take an uneasy look around. You didn't notice the silence until now, but now that you're aware, you realize that the only noises you hear are the slowly-moving river, the wind through the grass, and your own cautious footsteps. Seeing that there seems to be nothing around that would scare away stream life, you start to head downstream.

You follow the river for at least an hour, possibly two, before stopping to rest- your body doesn't need it, and you don't feel tired, but you do nevertheless. You're not sure why. Nevertheless, after the break, you start to notice something as you start downriver again. The air just feels different, somehow. It takes you a while to pinpoint what it is, before you realize that it's the smell of food. Food. The simple thought of it brings back memories that you can't quite grasp, slipping out of your mind once again. You try to tell which direction the smell is coming from, to some success- downriver. The wind must have shifted just enough to place you downwind of the source, wherever it is.

Go downriver, then. Cautiously, mind you.

Making your way further downstream, observing the environment around you, you follow the ever-so faint scent of food.

It's farther off than you originally expect, though. It takes you a good thirty minutes of walking to come within view of the source of the smell, a small camp nestled in the valley between two of the gently rolling hills that makes up the plain. Cautiously making your way to where you can see the camp in greater detail, you survey the area. The camp holds five bedrolls in a clump a bit away from a small fire ring that contains a merrily blazing fire. Five vague figures are huddled around the fire- you aren't close enough to make them out well yet.

Seeing as how the lovely scent of food is emanating from the large cooking pot suspended over the fire on a tripod, you slowly make your way closer, your body beginning to feel something you hadn't felt up until now- hunger. Deciding to make your move, you walk up to the crest of the hill, making yourself clearly visible to the group. The cluster around the fire stirs at once, the figure on the far side of the fire from you standing and beckoning you to join them.

Do you?

Examine the figures, ask who they might be before approaching.

You scan the circle as the other four turn to face you. "Who are you?" you ask, slowly making your way down from the crest of the hill.

The group debates among themselves for a second before the figure who had welcomed you answers. "Just a group of travelers. You look hungry- come and join us."

Thinking about it, you slowly move a bit closer, until you can make out the figures better in the firelight- it's starting to get dark. As far as you can tell, the group consists of two women and three men, all dressed in very similar clothing- grey cloaks over travel-worn shirts and pants. You can't see anything dangerous about them, but you're unsure whether to join them or not.

Join them at the fire, take a closer look at their faces and figures, look for anything unusual.

Ask where they are traveling from and where they hope to travel to.

You head down to the fire and take a seat, surveying the five as you do so. The two women look very much alike- both with blond hair and greenish eyes, from what you can see in this light. The men are all about the same height as yourself, as are the women, but one of them, the one who had greeted you, has a short black beard- the other two have brown or black hair as well. Setting yourself down on a convenient log, you stretch your legs out and ask "So, where are you guys from?"

There's a moment as the group looks around for who will go first. The woman closest to you decides to take the lead. "I've Viridana. I woke up in the northern plains, back the way you came from. My look-alike there is June, who woke up somewhere east of here, and those three are Hane, Tern, and Keran. They all woke up somewhere south of here, though separately."

"What do you mean, woke up? I mean, I know I just seemed to wake up, but does nobody know where they came from before here?"

"No," says Hane, the bearded man, answering for the group. "We all have vague memories that we can't seem to touch, but we have each other here, so we simply put whatever past we had behind us and got on with it. Our group here is coming from the West right now, and we're going to ford the river tomorrow, should you wish to travel with us- we wouldn't mind another companion going East."

"Why not follow the river instead? Have you tried that?"

Examine the river if it's nearby. Does it look normal? How does it smell? Is it audible as it flows?

Finally, submerge a hand in the river while sitting down next to it, then pull it out.
