character quirks
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:51:41 pm »

Hello, I am trying to think of little character quirks that I can use to help flesh out my cleric in a pathfinder campaign that I will be in in a few weeks. If you can think of any, pleas post them here.

I'd settle for capitalization. although all lower case seems to be zk's thing.

Well you could try something like he winces when touched.

Or maybe he has an alternate personality?

Turn him into a shipper on deck or a meta guy.

Also, one of the best ways to make a memorable character is to make them inconvenient. If your character is self-righteous and insufferable enough, they never forget it.

Slight contradictions sometimes help. Someone who's generous but a stickler for good deals can be more interesting than someone who's purely generous or a uniform miser, for instance. Similarly, people who hate everything but X or always do Y except when Z tend to be much more interesting on that particular note. Contradictions tend to beg the question why and give more insight into their characters than "because they're friendly" or "because they like money."

On that note, knowing anything about your cleric might help. Well, that or hurt by veering us towards the obvious ("Good cleric? Maybe he gives to the poor! Helps children? Hates undead? I'm sure there's something stereotypically good cleric that not every good cleric does...").

I know this guy. Don't encourage him.

Ah, yes. I will never forget the Paladin who knocked out a party member and tried to exorcise evil spirits out of him for killing a surrendered foeman.

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Yes, I remember the campaign he went through three characters in, killing both the healers the group got in two (more like 1.5) adventures. If the campaign hadn't been ended early, I'm sure he would have gone through more characters and healers.
And that's when he's not trying to be a troll.
Don't. Encourage. Him.

Or the drow who killed the cleric for not hitting the ethereal filcher with a mace when he didn't have any weapons?

Well, I'm obviously not advocating a character that is harmful to the party. You don't want to be that guy, because that guy is no fun to play with and a bad character. The only thing I'm saying is that a good character has interesting dynamics with the other members. The lawful good character who is very rigid, but easily manipulated and the character who is smart and of the chaotic side of the alignment have interesting dynamics. The charismatic character dominates the righteous one, who comes off as a sort of paper tiger. It makes for good roleplaying when done right. The character who randomly kills everyone is not a good character and harmful to the group. The character who has qualities that clash or mesh interestingly with other characters is beneficial to the group.

I'm not sure if it's him or his personality or his lack of experience or what, but he ruins more plans than he helps. Did I tell you about the time he ruined a plan, sometimes one he made, by angering the guards outside the building they were entering?
I'd have to be more specific, because he's done that in everything from low fantasy to cyberpunk.
