Is there a way to force vermin fish to restock?
« on: August 03, 2013, 07:23:25 pm »

I would have used the advanced search, but it's not being very responsive right now, actually, the forum seems to be going through one of its periods of slowness.

Long story short, I had made an embark on this nice looking lake site (goes beyond the embark) with a volcano in it which I had a few ideas for a possible megaproject, only to find that there were no fish to catch (haven't seen any creature fish, but I'm sure they are there). I did an abandon, regen and checked it again and there were fish again.

However, does anybody know of a way or an utility that will force the fish to restock? Hopefully Toady One has gotten this figured out for the DF 2013.

Though if someone DID find a way, I bet Toady would have implemented it.

Unfortunately, //all// creature populations are fixed once world gen ends (with the exception of your own dwarves and animals). The bottom line is that there is no way to repopulate your vermin without a third-party tool of some sort (and I don't know of any that can, although I don't use them so my knowledge is very shallow in this regard).

DFHack can be used to repopulate animals, including vermin; however I don't know if they'll join the fishing pool, or if they'll just spawn as nuisances. (Seriously, the number of times I've seen "There are no fish to catch" messages while the fisherdwarf is standing within 5 tiles of a vermin fish...)

Dang. Oh well.

All I can do then is just hope that it's fixed for the major release coming sometime this year.

It has always seemed to me like he fixes bugs as he feels like it. Right now hes adding new stuff and then I dont find it likely hell fix old bugs. Last major patch there were many much quicker after it that fixed loads of things though.

I don't know if Toady said anything about animal or vermin populations, but I have heard that the next major version will have the history continue (other civs war with each other, people born elsewhere besides the fort, outside events, etc) while in fort mode and possibly even be able to let time go by after abandoning fort, so he might retroactively fix it or get the vermin colonies to keep reproducing?
