How do you deal with early attacks?
« on: August 03, 2013, 06:17:13 pm »

I have just started a new fortress, and due to a large first immigration wave, one of my dwarves has made an artifact (do not know value, no broker) in the first summer. How will I deal with the ambushes caused by this sudden increase in wealth?

Early artifacts tend to be not too valuable, since only a few materials are used. I don't think the ambushes will be much earlier or harder than normally. Unless it was steel with diamond images and silk whatevers, that might be quite valuable.

Otherwise, some few extra traps will always solve your problems, but it's not to everyones taste. Taking a few of your big migrant wave and starting them on militia training immediately could help, especially as by the time the rest starts they'll have some skills to teach. Some people always take 2 of the starting 7 with militia skills and full time training just to start this off faster

Push migrants into military, set up traps and airlocks.

I'd suggest cage traps since they tend to make ambushes pop up and even stall them, just remember to forbid the cages so overly eager dwarves don't tries to gather them up while they're still around it.

unless they're bow gobs, that may work to lure the rest of the squad into traps, as they tend to hang around their captains cage untill that

(m)ilitary, (a)lerts.... keep the civilians safe in their underground burrow. No problem!

I was going to ask how you defined "early" but it sounds like you were between the first and second immigrations ... cage traps are the quickest solution for me.  At that stage I only have a squad with one guy to chase the interrupting critters... I don't even have barracks or burrow defined by then.  I suppose once I have established my own "first steps" list, I should check the starter guides.

Before anything else, just make sure that you have a lever-controlled raise bridge that can block access to your fort if needed. Then start looking into more offensive methods such as cage traps and wrestler militia.

Cage traps are massively overpowered.  You can pretty much deal with the first 5 years of attacks, and all cave creatures, with cages alone.  Dragons, crocs, spiders, werebeasts.... everything can be caged.  Even flying creatures, like eagles.  Cages cages cages.
