There's some hint guides on http://peyre.x10.mx/BARIS/index.htm - about halfway down "Ken Fishkin's Tips & Tricks, 1993" and the author's from 2008.  I don't agree 100% with the guides, but that's because one dang roll can really screw you in this game so it's hard to tell what's really the best plan.  The reusable XMS-2 is awesome when it works, and way painful when it (usually) doesn't.

I do TRY to do the Explorer ASAP, even if the booster and/or satellite aren't quite up to max researchable safety.  And I also try for Ken Fishkin's "pull 2 astronauts out of basic training in Fall of 1959 and schedule the sub-orbital for Spring 60", and go for it as long as atlas/mercury is *reasonably* close to max researchable safety.  Or sometimes even a bit worse on the capsule itself, and just close my eyes and press launch :p    Then schedule the orbital for Fall '60, and maaaybe if you feel lucky the duration B/spacewalk for Spring 61, and downgrade those if the suborbital failed but didn't degrade mercury too much.   Also you really have to start Gemini by about the 2nd or 3rd manned Mercury mission before a failure tanks the safety factor and ruins the technology transfer to Gemini.

And then pray the Russian rolls bad, because he can still beat you to just about all those firsts because the bastard takes massive chances, plus often launches early...

Thanks for all the info Gimlet, i'm not really bad due to lack of knowledge I just like playing a certain way or i make a mistake and get owned, seeing as I don't powergame anything I tend to lose frequently at this(very hard) game! It was on 2/3 difficulty too.

Also, when I get my hands on Fritz Bronners original board game(maybe soon?*) I will definitely host a forum adaptation using the rules and cards etc! It's basically BARIS with additional nations like India and Japan!
If you can't tell, I'm a huge BARIS fan :P

*Couple of weeks on this, I've emailed the creator whom I know had(hopefully some left!) a ?small? stock of the board games left over he sells personally.

This is what i'm referring to:

Yeah it's grim going though if you don't get at least *some* of the prestige the first few years - your budget gets so grim you can barely do anything and the Soviet's is scary.  They can still roll bad and stumble, and you CAN come back, but man it is uphill to actually make it to the moon by the end of the game then.

Yeah, I think you need to win a first in manned flight if not in Mercury in Gemini to have any chance, the Soviets stole both of those from me that last game. because I played like a snail.

Of note, there is a "play by mail" option but clicking it flashes the screen without anything happening. I wonder if it's just the sourceforge version (I'd be willing to try DOSbox) or it's dependent on some long-forgotten website.

AFAIK it was never implemented and never will be, i've been in contact with the Windows BARIS people for a while on and off and i've never heard anything about it being done.

*Also looks like I'm going for Soviets this time, unanimously ;).

Oh yeah, please put my name in - Comrade Cosmonaut Gimlet reporting!

And I just fired it up and got fired in '64, after having the "no rockets for a year" at the worst time, plus safety downgrades on Atlas twice, Mercury once, also at just the most bastardly times to let the Soviets get all the firsts.    Plus I screwed up and didn't realize I needed a boosted Titan for unmanned orbital docking, wasting another couple launches.  In all I think I had more scrubbed missions than launches - for a change no one actually died though, yay!

Yeah lol I always stock up cause that game likes to screw you at the worst possible moment.

I THINK there is an ingame encyclopaedia which has info on what you need for what equipment etc, but I could be wront (in library on one of the buildings near the capital)

1957-1960

Sputnik I

Soviet Satellite program Stronk! Soviet Union Stronk!

1961

Murricans get first man in spess and first orbit...... snatched again! We will get the first 2 man! after we get one man in spess...

Boksi scores one back for socialism by doing an earth orbit straight away with no suborbital manned test! Hurrah for recklessness!

Yeah all the details are on one of the files on that hints page I linked above (a REALLY handy section "What to Pack for the Trip"), I was just too lazy to look.  I was *sure* that atlas+boosters was enough for gemini+docking, but that's only in the Basic Model and I was doing Historical.  Atlas+boosters is enough for Gemini  Manned/Unmanned Orbital Docking(Orbit) missions, where there's a docking module already in orbit - I save a few bucks that way.

And yeah I often buy ahead some stuff for the next season at least, but it was so early and I was so far behind (familiar refrain :p) that money was really tight, I spent down to 0 just to get the research on track for the launches.  Oh well, this game it looks like the Commie is really getting screwed, I actually beat him to Orbital Satellite, he snuck in his Manned Suborbital before me, I scored a ton with a Manned Orbital Duration B EVA - woot!  Looks like he lost 3 satellites before making it, plus his Manned Orbital.  Now I shudder to think what it's gonna be like when the luck swings the other way :D

And yay for World Socialism with 2 strong firsts!

I screwed up slightly because I had to wait 2 turns for my nauts to be trained, and the capsule was basically ready. But hey no one died, it could have been worse.

Don't forget you can pull a guy or 2 out of Basic Training to get those first launches scheduled, the computer definitely does it and I do it whenever I think I can get Mercury *reasonably* close to being ready next season.  I usually end up scrubbing the launch 'cause Mercury safety isn't there, but sometimes you get an event or a really lucky research roll...
