What's your favourite soundtrack to a game?
« on: August 03, 2013, 01:11:45 am »

Lots of video games have pretty damn awesome scores/soundtracks, so what are your favourites?

Mine are those of the Timesplitters series as well as Starcraft and Legend of Zelda: Windwaker.

Arcanum's soundtrack is the one soundtrack to rule them all. Every single track is evocative, immersive and unique at the same time: three characteristics that, taken together, let it beat the living crap out of every other soundtrack I have heard.

UPD: Since everyone here seems to give examples, I'll give a few as well:

Metal Gear Solid games always have a pretty awesome soundtrack, the best (in my opinion) being MGS3.

For me, Thomas Was Alone was sold pretty much on its narration and its soundtrack alone.

I've thought about this in the past, and can't really pick a single soundtrack.  It depends on my mood.

The Mega Man X games are strong contenders, but so are the Legend of Zelda games. And Kirby...

...and the one off tracks I listen to from other games, like from Stronghold (and Crusader).

Can't choose...

Hmm. Wow, that's tough to narrow down.

For older stuff, Star Control 2, DOOM, Jazz Jackrabbit, Castlevania, the pause music from Battletoads(!)...Golden Sun(all of them. Yes, even Dark Dawn. Luna Tower and anything Apollo Ascent and onward was awesome)

More recently, almost everything from Mass Effect (all of them) was top-notch. Binding of Isaac. FTL. I'm sure there's more, but I'll stop there.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Off of the top of my head I like the soundtrack to Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines and in fact it has kind of turned me onto some bands that I would have otherwise never heard of. I also like the Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey soundtrack and in fact got a copy of it when I bought my copy of said game back in 2009. I'm also quite fond of the soundtracks to Chaos;Head, Yume Miru Kusuri: A Drug That Makes You Dream, Shuffle, and Saya no Uta, and I am also kind of partial to the soundtrack for Touhou 10.5: Scarlet Weather Rhapsody as well. Outside of that and the soundtrack for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind I would say that most of the time the games I play these days either do not have a proper soundtrack or they happen to have one that gets a little repetitive after a while and thus requires me to in the end either turn off the music for better immersion or provide my own soundtrack via Winamp.

Perfect Dark, full bloody stop. Those basslines. Those beats. That weird instrument I can't really describe in text, but gives me chills every time. I wish there were more soundtracks like Perfect Dark's.

Starcraft's soundtrack is a pretty strong contender too, but mostly because of the Terran songs. Command and Conquer's soundtrack is always a ton of fun. I think I've spent more time in the song menu than playing the actual missions.
