I found a cavern filled with water
« on: August 02, 2013, 03:59:19 pm »

Hi guys, first post. I just started a new fortress and a few levels down I found a cavern completely filled with water. This is the first cavern I've found playing. Sooo... what do i do about this? Also, if it helps, I'm playing with masterwork. Thanks.

Incorperate it into some elaborate trap system that results in a drowning chamber, said chamber has been thoughtfuly prebuilt by the world.

More seriously though you need to be a bit more specific on your goals if you want us to be able to advise you on a course of action.  A bit more detail on the problem couldnt hurt either.  Such as is the whole Z lvl water or is it just a big underground lake with walls some distance off to the side.

As far as goals go, I just want build a large and wealthy fortress. Also, I lied when i said it was the whole cavern, but everything except the bottom z level that's filled with water is empty space and walls. And, as far as I can see, It's all water. Almost like an aquifer, but i turned aquifers off.

Caverns can get water from outside source ( the hollows off to the sides of embarks ), or have ponds of water in it.

If it's in the way, cave in something from above :D

Well in this case by goal I ment more or less your goal haveing to do with this problem.   are you just trying to get under it to go deeper?   If so the poster above me's solution of a cavin is probably the quickest.

It sounds like you hit an underground lake.   It probably does not stretch all the way accross the map but that inital reveal only shows a small area of it.   another way around the problem would be dig a couple exploratory tunnels on the level above the cavern and periodically dig a probing channel off to the side.   If it digs into the same lake it will reveal more of it, if you just hit stone you've found the edge of the thing and can continue down past the lake at that point.

You can remove water via cave in?!

Dear Urist McStockpileDrone
I just found a barrel which contained a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was another barrel. I don't even understand how that is possible.

Nah, it's more cave in put land where there used to be water, to make it easier to go through it. Water ( or magma as case may be ) get displaced to top of the cave-in stuff, which's how magma piston works.

What you do is drop cave-in dirt to plug certain holes. If the waterlogged area extends all the way to the very absolute edge of the map, then it counts as sourced water, which means that water will flow in from off-site. However, if you plug that up, you can then drain the water with pumps and careful evaporation, and then install a floodgate (and by that I mean drawbridge) near the cave-in plug, and then channel that back out. This lets you add water whenever you need it, but gives you the option to turn it off at will.

Be warned that:

you need to understand how cave-ins work!
you need to be dropping at least 2 full, unmined z-levels of dirt into place or it won't actually plug it up (and depending on how deep the water actually goes, you might need more)
you need to plug EVERY SINGLE HOLE before you bother to start pumping
you can't dig out the very last tile of the map, so you'll need to pick spots 2-4 tiles in from the edge as your plugs.
you need to watch out for cavern wildlife, as they can and will get in your way during construction--especially aquatic wildlife. Cage traps are great as if you can get the guys caged, new people won't wander in from off-site until you butcher the caged ones, but caging cavern creatures can be haphazard at best, unless you plant cages ALL across the map edge or otherwise have a way to funnel them through a caging zone. Also, flying creatures.

If all you want is a "large, wealthy fortress" then you don't actually need to ever go into the caves. Once you've cracked them, you can seal them back up, and you'll still be getting fungus and shrubs and saplings in your soil layers. It's also entirely possible, if you just want to dig deeper, to just dig staircases through the walls--as long as they're surrounded on all 8 adjacent tiles with stone, you won't get water in your staircase. Or horrible abominations, for that matter.

I hate it when I get water in my horrible abominations.

If you don't want to weaponize that water, the cavern lakes are full of clean water, and sometimes your fishers can get cave fish out of them.

Channel a hole above it and build a well, or designate a water source and fishing zone right alongside it.
