New Crafts - Need ideas
« on: July 31, 2013, 11:04:43 am »

I need a bit of help, I want to introduce a few new crafts, but my creativity seems to be running low atm. I want to rename the 7 vanilla crafts to something more useful, then make custom rings/amulets/bracelets that can actually be assigned to dwarves and have effects.

Crafts. What can they be changed to? Migrants will still arrive with it in their inventory, and the craftsdwarf will produce it in a category called "crafts". But the name can be freely chosen, as can the graphics and the purpose. For example: Change Ring to Smoking Pipe. Migrants arrive with it, thats ok. The craftsdwarf makes it, also ok. Then I can add a proper tile for pipes, and a reaction to smoke the pipe. Result: We have a new craft and a new tile for decoration, and give it a purpose. The current list is:
Ring =>  ?
Earring => ?
Figurine => ?
Amulet => ?
(Scepter)* => ?
[Bracelet] => Has been changed to Hourglass. (Any better ideas?)
[Crown] => Has been changed to Dice. (Any better ideas?)
*The graphics tile for this one is hardcoded and looks like '|'. I'd keep it like this.

Some people might say: But I like to have rings, earrings, amulets and crowns... well, you cant assign them to a dwarf manually. I cant make magic rings and give them to the mayor, or an amulet of protection and give it to the military commander. But I can do new ones, custom items that can actually be equipped. I can make rings, earrings, amulets and assign them to dwarves. I already did it with crowns. :)

The first thing that popped into my head was spectacles. Might be able to give them to dwarves with poor eye sight to enhance their ability to see. You could use raw glass and a bar of metal as required materials.

Edit: Also monocles.

Monocle - making a dwarf blind. :P

Fan - +5% speed.

Chopsticks - make dwarves eat less often, [noeat] once per year or something like this.

Drinking horn - same with [nodrink].

Keychain - not lose keys. :P I don't know, good thoughts again maybe.

Beard comb - resistance to cold weather.

Castanets and spoons as musical instruments.

Ehm.. I might have expressed myself badly. Dwarves cant USE those crafts, you cant assign them to dwarves. Just like you cant assign the vanilla rings, bracelets and so forth to any. They just might grab them randomly.

The new use for the custom crafts I want to do is either: Reactions in Workshops, or: Freeing a tile for graphics, making a new decoration for example.

Required materials will always be 1 boulder or 1 bar. Remember, these are the hardcoded crafts in the craftsdwarf and forge. I can only RENAME them. Not change them.

Useless crafts? Hmm.

-Bookends
-(Sculpted?) paperweights
-Can you keep Figurines as a useless craft? If not, Model or Statuette or something, so you can still use the "vanilla" +Diorite (blank) of a Tentacle Demon+
-Vase (I guess technically useful, but you've already added potted plants, so...)
-Candlestick (replacing scepter)
-Picture Frame (Useless because dwarves don't paint EXCEPT IN BLOOD and vomit)
-Tray
-Trinket

I'm trying to avoid using synonyms here (save for the figurine replacement) because that might get confusing (amulet vs. talisman), but there are plenty of "clothing" crafts like cufflinks, broaches, epaulettes and what have you. Good luck!

What about post cards... it's perfectly viable for a dwarf to want to use rock/bone/elfblood for 'wish you were here'.

Scale model of <insert fort name here>

belt buckles - as great as being pant-less is, the majority see no reason to get caught with their pants down.

A booze hat. Wait, never mind,  that's useful.

Prayer beads.

Pinwheel.

paperweights and bookends sound good

Abacus is great, I can clearly use it in reactions. Awesome idea.

Lantern and Mirror both make good decorations, Lantern could give light using the rendermax plugin.

Bracelets are already there, I want to replace them ^^, bottles = flasks/waterskins. Matches => I dont know... rock matches? Sulphur and Wood, yes, but pure rock makes no sense.

I'll just ignore the menacing spikes, ok? :P

Scale models, belt buckles, A booze hat, Prayer beads, Pinwheel, paperweights and bookends... Ehm... I wouldnt really know what to use those for, except the prayer beads. But religion is such a small part of the mod, and these crafts would be hardcoded into every game. I dont think people imagine DF dwarves to be very devout.

Ora: I was looking for things I can use in an industry/reaction, that are also items a dwarf might carry around. I can absolutely believe that a dwarf carries a pipe and a pair of dice, but why would migrants appear with paperwheights, trays and vases? ^^

You already get a trophy from each megabeast that you kill (see slaughterhouse reactions) and you can use the display stand to put it in your meeting hall. :)

Hmmm...

Well, random ideas.

Tankard/mug/stein to drink alcohol with.

A lucky rabbit's foot, or some similar talisman.

Beard ornaments/decorations.

Goggles/Binoculars/Telescope

Smith's apron.

Gas mask.

Ruler.

Compass.

Map.

Flint and steel/fire striker/match.

First aid kit.

Swiss (dwarf?) army knife.

Water purifier.

Screwdriver, wrench, hammer, saw.. pick any number of mechanic/carpentry tools.

Duct (dwarf?) tape.

---

Trying to think of items that can be carried and used.  May have some more ideas later.

Herp derp, that'll teach me to skim posts  :P

Well, pretty much everything that I'd say has been said. I suppose...snuffboxes?

I would (gently) defend candlesticks as legitimate travel goods, given that if you're moving somewhere new, you'll probably take some valuables.

Maybe work from the other end and think of reactions you'd like to add, if that makes any sense. Like if you wanted to somehow control the trading threshhold of a merchant, you could do a reaction with a wallet that "upgrades" the amount of goods a merchant can buy. Or...something to that effect, I'm rather new to the limits of reactions.

Considering the popularity of Succession Games, how about Journals? It seems that every Dwarf carries one around in those.
