How do I throw a dorf in jail?
« on: July 30, 2013, 04:13:37 pm »

My trusted tanner went insane and now I need to put him away. I made a jailcell with a bed, food stockpile and a door to shut him in, I also have some ropes. How do I throw him in there?

you dont.  Jails are for the use of the dwarven justice system.   If a production order is not compleated or a mandate ignored the noble of the fort may assign jail time to the dwarf, to be served in the jail you make, but there isnt a way to just manualy drag a dwarf in there particularly if they've gone insane.    If he's gone berserk you can (and probably should) have your military put him out of his misery before he hurts someone.   If he went melancholy or stark raving mad just ignore him, he'll die on his own in a few months, there's nothing you can really do for him.

If you have unsolved crimes(like if you have a vamp problem) you might be able to arbitraraly convict that dwarf of it.  he might get jail time but then agian he might get sentenced to a hammering as well.

Ahh, I see!
Hm, how will the nobleman know where the jail is, can it be set as a zone?
And how do I enable the justice system? My fort dosn't have a nobleman. And can I make one of my dorfs a nobleman?

its not a zone but a room. you designate it from either the cage or the restraint you built

[q] over a built chain and make it a room to use it for justice. Assign a sheriff/captain of the guard and they will chain up criminals.

Acquiring nobles will happen naturally over the course of your game. The expedition leader will eventually be replaced by a mayor, and you will be able to assign other noble positions like counts and such.
The [n] screen is where you do this assigning.

Also, if you want to punish dwarves who haven't yet committed a crime, you have to have sheriff, and an unsolved crime, and then [z], go to justice, press "accuse someone", and then you can (falsely) accuse anyone you want.

I'll ask a related question here if I may;

I have a vampire, and I have identified him. I've already convicted the vampire for the double murder in my fortress, however, the vampire is still not in jail.
I have;
- 6 chains and 6 cages designated for justice use (also shows in Justice screen)
- A designated Hammerer (with a hammer)
- A Sheriff

However, my vampire is still running around doing odd jobs and is not being put in jail. He even has a 'glad to be free' thought. I've tried both activating / deactivating both of the squads employing my hammerer and sheriff to get a 'put in jail' job to start. I've noticed that my hammerer wanted to go to a meeting with the mayor, so I cancelled all tasks on the mayor to see if that was causing a hold up. They had their meeting, but nothing changed.
Last time I had a criminal, he was swiftly put in jail (it was in this same fortress), so I just don't know why they refuse to put this vampire in jail.

What am I missing?

Press [z] and check the justice screen to see if he's marked to be put in jail.

He's marked as 'no sentence pending', I was assuming he'd get sentenced after being put in jail. Last time the vampire got 200 days and 50 hammerstrikes. It would seem very weird to me if this one gets away without any punishment?

anyone have a clue if this vampire is going to be put in jail? or does that 'no sentence pending' mean he'll be running around until he kills another one of my good dorfs?

"Happy to be free" and "no sentence pending" means the vampire was released from jail and is no longer queued up for ...Justice. If you can't trump up some charges, they'll stay free. Did any of your nobles get an unhappy thought because a criminal couldn't be punished properly? Check the mayor and hammerer (might actually have been related to the hammerer trying to have a meeting, fort dwarfs only request meetings if they're very unhappy) and maybe re-check if the requirements for hammerings are really met - i think you must have an accessible chain and hammerer-available hammer, burrows and the like can probably mess this up.

And cages in a jail are a very poor idea if any non-vampires can possibly get thrown in there - dwarfs in cages depend on the charity of other dwarfs to stave off dehydration and starvation, and currently feeding/watering prisoners is broken, so that getting sent to a cage for 30+ days is actually a death sentence.

That's so weird. Apparently the mayor figured double murder wasn't worth a sentence.

I'm almost sure all the requirements had been met, last time it was 200 days prison + 50 hammerstrikes.

He just ate another dorf, I'm pretty glad it was just a kid. Now he did get put in jail for that 3rd murder, for 200 days, but no hammerstrikes :( (My Hammersquad captain is also the hammerer, so yes, he has a hammer equipped at all times). I guess I'll have to arrange for some bad stuff / fun to happen to my vampire now. Might seal him in, or test if they really can't drown. (I have water plumbing on all floors :)).

Thanks for the tip on the cages. I guess I'll deconstruct them and add drink/food stockpiles to the other jail cells and add some more chains.

Anyone have any other tips on what to do with my resident vampire?

Lock him in the room with all the levers and a chair, and make him your manager/control dwarf.

Hmz, that might actually work. I have most of my levers in one place. If he ever throws a tantrum.... have tantruming dwarfs been reported pulling random levers? don't want him to flood my fortress, since some of my plumbing is controlled from the same room as well :)
