Dwarves not Gaining Experience from training.
« on: July 30, 2013, 08:23:28 am »

Sorry for the the silly questions but I can't seem to work out this problem.

I have a squad of 10 hammerdwarves and none of them seem to be gaining experience from training, I had one adequate hammerdwarf which I made the captain and assigned him 9 recruits. I saw that they occasionally did individual practice or demonstrations according to the 'u' screen but after about 2 years of constant training the adequate hammerdwarf and the recruits gained no experience at all in anything. They are all armed with silver war hammers, they have been set to active/Train continuously. They have an assigned barracks which they are set to train at sleep at and store equipment at and the barracks has 10, weapon racks, armour stands and beds. Could the problem be that none of them have any skill in leader, teacher or student at all? (same for all 200 of my dwarves).

As an aside I had a goblin siege where about 10 goblins just sat on the other side of a river so I sent all my hunters down as a squad of marks dwarves with the hammerdwarves and also another 10 recruits I tried to train as marksdwarves (unsuccessfully.) the goblins just crossed the river and murdered all the dwarves. How wide does a river have to be to stop goblins crossing? This one was 7 depth and 2 wide, but 1 wide in a few places.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

It is easier and for me more efficient to put the hammerdwarfs in 5 squads with 2 dwarfs in each.
That way they will spar more often.
And at least for me they gain xp really slow in the beggining and later they gain it faster. So just put them in two and two and let them train.

That was a brook, not a river, wasn't it?  Brooks have floor tiles on top that creatures (including both your dwarfs and invaders) can walk across.

Another possibility is that the river froze solid and the invaders walked across the ice.

Did the invaders have mounts?  Aquatic mounts like giant olms or toads have no problem swimming.  They usually drown their riders when they do so, but if the river is narrow and they bolt straight across, the riders might not have time to drown before they're back out of the water.

with the training, did you set it to minimum 3 or something? you shouldn't see anyone doing much individual training unless they have free time. I had a bunch of marksdwarf recruits do melee training, so they started from scratch in that respect, and they all had some dodging and such skills just from demonstrations from other 'skill 0' recruits, though I don't remember how many years it took.

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.
