In response to Cheesecake's question as I catch up to the IC thread: the Commissar, as a political officer, does not hold a rank within the Imperial Guard's hierarchy and is sent by the Commissariat to maintain the discipline and loyalty of the IG's regiments, with one Commissar being the usual number for a regiment at a given time, though more may be assigned depending on the regiment's nature.

Due to the nature of their job, however, it also means a Commissar can theoretically go as far as execute the regiment commander as long as he proves there was a reason for it (heresy being the most common one), while a common soldier would be executed on the spot for such a transgression. Commissars are also known for executing both soldiers and field officers on the spot if they consider them lacking, cowardly or incompetent.

In short: they hold no rank but are usually respected and/or feared and lead men whenever there isn't a ranked officer in the field.

Priests are also respected by the nature of their work, but if I remember correctly they hold no ranks.

On another note, there is a ranking system within the Commissariat. The Commissar class from Only War is above Junior Commissar and below Commissar-Captain.

I also have a question relevant for most other characters: how much ammo are we assumed to have for our "special" weapons, such as the Commissar's Bolt Pistol and the Weapon Specialist's Melta Gun?

Because of well supplied, I believe we can select to have to cells, mags, etc... for either the specialist weapon, or your carbine.

By the way, does anyone have the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer? It is a good guide as to what the rookie Imperial Guardsman knows, though by now the regiments from our world are already aware most of what is said about the orks in the Primer is bullshit, since they are mentioned as being smaller and weaker than humans. If there is Dark Eldar activity in our sector, I'd imagine it is also reasonable to assume stories about their actual combat prowess have spread amidst the IG ranks.
