My tileset...(updated 10.21.2007)
« on: March 26, 2007, 01:21:00 am »

I decided to sit down and make a tileset of my own since none of the current ones fit my very meticulous standards.

Version 1.1

Version 2.0 Hot off the presses as of 10/22/2007!
DFMA image of my new tileset in action

It is based upon the "curses square 16x16" tileset but as you can see heavily modified.

Please note that due to the multiple uses for any single tile, there are some idiosyncracies with this. They are not bugs.  My intention is to make the game itself look the way I wish even at the expense of some text. Notably, the . the + and the O are abberant in text.

I like it.

It reminds me of the old video machine games, long before the personal computer.

Ok, don't take this the wrong way, but as soon as I saw the dwarves, I thought, "mmm... gummi bears!"

LOL!
The creatures are not in my tileset, the walls bridges etc are.

The creature tileset is one I picked up from the wiki, I believe.

Generally, it looks good, but I dislike the way the new tiles blend with the original tiles. The (what I believe to be) smooth floor tile for example look nice, but don't blend well with the unsmoothed floor tile.

Also, the minimalistic and hi-res style of most tiles contrasts with the bulbous cages and bins.

I'd really like to see your tileset as a complete set (new images for everything), as I believe it will go a long way towards making it look great  :)

As a final tip, remember that you can paint with the entire grayscale for more detail. (though that probably isn't needed for most of what's already in the tileset)

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

I was planning on making my own tiles for nearly everything, including the non smoothed floor tiles and stockpiles specifically.  As i said in my original post, this is an 'early version' basically an alpha.

I am not happy with the barrels, I want to do more work on them.

Thanks for the comments, all. I am definitely going to continue.

Odd how people showed interest until I posted the tileset itself then the topic went dead...

Maybe if you added something to criticize, or perhaps post a finished tileset there would be something to talk about.

We should soon be able to individualise things more, allowing us to make singular alterations to anything without affecting text.

After that, I really look forward to the expansion of the number of tiles on screen at a time.
