I don't have any real experience with meditation, but I can say that if you are already depressed, being alone with your thoughts won't help.

The easies way to hack your brain into getting better is testosterone. It's not nice in the long term (you get dependant on it to be happy), but as a way to start doing better stuff, it's OK. If you happen to be good at some sport1, just play a match against somebody you know you are going to win. That will bump your happiness meter enough to start doing better stuff.

1) Can also be a competitive videogame. Just stick to noob servers and headshot people until you feel better. Just remember that testosterone is not the definitive solution.

Disclaimer: this is not the best way to get better, just an accessible one.

Meditation doesn't seem like it would be particularly helpful, unless it was carefully guided by someone with experience and training. It might be worth doing for other purposes though.

I should have been more clear, I was considering that to help me work on my ability to focus, not my depression. This current wave has mostly passed, and I'll keep your advice in mind to follow next time.

Meditation might help that. I've heard good things about reading, too. I am not being sarcastic, I have had discussions with ADD sufferers who have said that they trained themselves somewhat out of that through extensive reading. That's just a thing I have heard, though.

I've already done a whole lot of extensive reading, in fact I can spend an entire day reading a book if I feel like it, and I used to do that a lot. Which suggests that maybe I have a different problem. Now that I thank of it, the things I have trouble focusing are things that I find difficult and feel like I'm bad at. So maybe I should address that, then.

So, like a normal person then? Yeah, you are getting into self-confidence territory there. I know the feel. -fistbump-

-Returns Fistbump- Yeah, but I feel like I'm a lot worse at it than most people.

That's possible. I don't know you, so I couldn't say. Are you a teen or in your early twenties? If so, likely enough, you are a bad at it as everyone else, though of course practice and conscious effort to improve are probably the best way to handle that issue either way.

I'm 19. I'm mostly basing this off the fact that I can't seem to get more than 12 or so lines of code done a day, despite the fact that what I'm programming is really simple.

How mcuh coding have you done in your life? I have dabbled a bit. I once took a class in Java, and I have two Java textbooks next to my chair right now, and am trying to code a couple simple programs for practice before i dive into the rather simple program I want to make. But, I don't remember much of Java at al, so it is going painfully slow, and i tend to concentrate on it for like ten minutes at a time before i get information overload and have to stop (usually in frustration).

I can usually go on well enough until I come to a problem and can't decide how exactly I want to handle it. I actually just posted a description of my current dilemma in the programming thread.

Looks interesting. Sometimes a problem like that simply needs to percolate in your brain a while. Other times, as you have done here, the internets are the way to go. Hurrah!

Depression because you feel like something is too difficult, which should be easier than it is? You believe others don't have to try as hard as you to accomplish it?

There's a David Wong article (or 2) for that too!

Oh, and here's a really good article on recent studies demonstrating why young people today are unable to deal with basic life difficulties due to an entire generation of bad parenting: http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200411/nation-wimps (A good read regardless of whether it applies to you.)

Try playing space station 13 on one of the more serious servers
It works for this one person I used[\i] to know who is terminally ill currently.
IDK though it could work
