Eliminating sandbags
« on: March 26, 2007, 12:35:00 am »

I've several hundred sandbags that where detailed by over enthusiastic craftsdwarves and as a consequence are useless, but still clutter up my stockpiles. My Chasm que is filled with the tonnes of narrow clothing so I thought i might try burning them. However after filling my new sandbag store with magma, the bags seem entirely unaffected.

..This is my first use of magma but I had been under the impression that it would incinerate everything but metal and stone. Am I incorect or are sandbags simply an aberation?

Anyway... can you think of a good way to get rid of them otherwise?

outdoors dumping pile.

~edit~
I actually found that the leather etc stuff that is dropped from enemies is great trade fodder. Light and worth lots!

Also, is temperature enabled in the init file?
If it isn't, it makes magma pretty much useless IIRC

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

"I thought it was the size of the others!" said Vanon. "I guess it was just standing further away!"

Magma is still very much dangerous with temperature turned off, it just won't do anything except harm and melt living creatures.

Besides, with temperature on, doesn't it just set the bags on fire, whereupon your dwarves all rush in to pick them up, light themselves on fire, continue their business as if nothing happened and wipe out your whole fortress in minutes?

How do you do this?
I find it hard enough to trade away the products made by the dwarves themselves. What's worse, you only get different things in exchange -- stuff that will again block some stockpile or other.

I found trading the humans and dwarves for meat and cheese gives me plenty, and later that's all they bring, in great quantities.  I actually ended up running out of salvaged leather items to trade (I always loaded them up to their max weight which is a LOT of leather stuff), and started trading them gold and platinum crafts because my particular map was very rich in gold and platinum.

the problem there is that any forign items you trade do not count against your export totals.  thus, the fame of your fort will not increase unless you are exporting locally made goods.

naturally, this does not make any difference unless you are trying to attract the king or something.  but its good to keep in mind.
