Irrigation
« on: October 29, 2007, 07:57:00 pm »

Hmmm, I'm built a channel with floodgates at each end, and one end connected to a river, I opened the floodgate to a river, filling it with water, and then closed it off.  The water stayed within the channel.
This throws up an issue for farming; how to drain the field after flooding it with water?
The obvious way would be a side chamber with grates in the floor, that can be opened and the water drained when required, but the question remains, where should the water go?  Any reservior to hold the water would fill up.  Pumps could be used, but that seems a little bit of a pain right at the start of the game.
Any ideas?

I think that water evaporates eventually, it just takes longer, so drain the water into a reservoir then it should evaporate by the time you need to flood it again.

I'm going to do the grate thing, with a large resevoir for water under it. Hopefully the water will evaporate before the next flooding is needed.
