So I had a thought. Since Marksdwarves without bolts use the Hmmerdwarf skill, shouldn't silver crossbows be the best crossbows, because of their weight?

or am I missing something?

I'd imagine that artifact slade crossbows would be best due to weight.

Silver crossbows are the best. Only you can't make them in fort mode, but you can buy those. Copper crossbows are good too.

I'm in the, "if your marksdwarves get into melee you're doing it wrong camp," with a partial membership of, "screw crossbow bash, add bayonets or make them carry a second weapon for the occasional slash of an axe." Really though, wood crossbows, because why slow them down for an attack they should never use to be slightly less useless. In fact, if I recall correctly, right now combat attack speed is tied to move speed, so you don't want to slow them down and make them less effective with fewer bolts in the sky. Of course, I know thats subject to change with the new version, if its true at all.

I use bone crossbows, because for some reason unlike make bone crafts, make bone crossbows uses one bone apiece. So since crossbows are the most cost-effective use of bones, I always have a shitload of bone crossbows.

I pretty much only use bone or wood crossbow, mostly bone for above mentioned reason, plus you can take birds anywhere and have them live. Though I expect that might be a bit of an issue in evil embarks. Leather and wood shields to go with them too

Best hammering crossbow material is copper, since there're no unmodded way to make silver crossbow outside of strange moods. Though I'd recommend having back-up squad with melee weapon rather than trying to mix it up with crossbowers or giving them multiple weapons.

If a bowyer has the highest skill, bone. If a weaponsmith, copper. Considering I need 20-30 crossbows, but countless bolts, trap components, 10-20 axes and hammers etc, usually the first squad gets bone, and the later ones get copper. Never steel

Silver crossbows = worst crossbows

Because you can only get them at low quality from caravans, and crossbow quality affects accuracy.
