Jagged Alliance 2: Vive La Revolution
« on: July 24, 2013, 10:46:39 pm »

Glorious comrades! Revolution is upon us!

We have been under oppression for too long! The queen has tortured the weak and killed our strongest. We must bring our king, Enrico, back to the throne.

A generous benefactor only known as "Engy" has provided us the funds necessary for this revolution. We will hire mercenaries, buy equipment, and assist the rebels in their overthrow of the queen.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

JA2 has been a game I've heard a lot about, but never looked into. It came onto my radar during the recent Steam Summer Sale. I realized while playing it that this was definitely a jewel in the rough I had missed over the years. It's very much like X-Com, and if any of you have read my previous Let's Plays, you'll know that I really do like the X-Com style of play.

I decided to Let's Play this mostly blind. I was planning on going completely blind, but crashes and glitches in the first update caused me to restart repeatedly. Thankfully, I think I've narrowed down the source of these issues, but I may have to replay updates in the future due to the instability of the game.

The game's story is about the overthrow of a queen on an imaginary island nation. You're enlisted by Enrico, who was ran out of the country by his wife, to take back the throne for him.

I'm running the 1.13 mod (which I've been told improves game play immensely) , and decided to run with these settings. While I'm unsure what the consequences of most of these are, I do know this will be an extremely difficult (and perhaps short lived) let's play with the difficulty settings I've placed. I also have a house rule of iron man in place. I didn't use the in game option so I can be more flexible.

Anyway, on to the update! While you won't be able to create your own merc (I limited this due to min-maxing issues), you are welcome to claim one of the preexisting mercenaries or perhaps role play as an auxiliary member (pilot, villager, etc). Since I am playing this blind, I would ask that you please discuss spoilers with the appropriate tags.

1.13 is not good for a first play. It adds a lot of broken things, unbalances the game, changes tonnes of things arbitrarily, and just makes things more confusing. 1.13 is made for people who have been playing the game for 10 years and want something new. I would use one of the bugfixing mods like Stracciatella-continued instead.

Fuck, I was going to start a JA2 LP. Now I feel like I have a competitor in the off chance I actually go through with it.

It's a little too late for that, but I'll remember that if I do another LP.

Well, funny that. I don't think it'll be a problem considering I just lost.

While I could post all the screenshots, they're mostly just me shooting waves upon waves of enemies in somewhat strategic positions. I attacked the nearest city, after some recuperation (and grabbing another mercenary for the push). It went ok. Grace ate some assault rifle bullets and died, but overall it looked like I was going to take the northern part of the city. But then reinforcements hit me on my flank at the worst time. I had wounded bleeding on the road and I was fighting on three fronts. Not to mention the reinforcements having some kind of sniper rifle. I had no way to escape so in the end, while ending up killing at least 15 loyalists, everyone died. With no funds to really recruit a new army, I'm going to call the LP a close.

Definitely my shortest LP. I should have headed the advice of a couple people who said expert really was "hardcore". Ah well. Twas fun while I lasted.  :P

1.13 isn't unbalanced per say. I mean, you can use the new features to make it so, but the base game itself isn't really affected much (Aside from the NCTH system, though that does balance off snipers a bit by making them not-so useful for CQC) I'd go as far to say that it actually does fix more than a few problems balance-wise in the original game.

Not to mention the most broken parts of the game are still in the game.
