Good gameboy advance games
« on: July 24, 2013, 05:29:40 pm »

Hello chaps, was wondering if I could get some recommendations for good gameboy games, rpgs mainly but anything goes. Pokemon and zelda are obviously excused for being obvious.

The star wars original trilogy tie-in game. At least, that was the best GBA game I had. It's essentially a combination of 2D platformer and fighting game.

Megaman Battlenetwork 1-3 and 6...

With 4 and 5 being terrible... In fact they are probably single handedly responsible for killing the series.

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga. Best one of the mario luigi rpg series, in my opinion.

Also there's Gameboy ports of the Super Mario World games.

Ooh, yeah, I forgot about Advance Wars. It's a bit simplistic at times (in comparison to PC titles, so take that with a grain of salt). Good games, though, and the characters have a bit of character to them.

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow is a platformer with RPG elements, and it's pretty super cool. It was my first Castlevania, and I liked it as much as CV:SotN which I played later.

I was frankly terrible at platformers at the time, but the soul system in the game (every single enemy in the game has a small chance of dropping an equippable signature ability which you can then use) was so neat I kept coming back to it.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a great way to waste time.  Not that great of a game, but if you're the type of person that needs to collect everything and do all the sidequests it can take dozens of hours.

Why isn't the Megaman Zero series not mentioned? It's got an interesting story and fun gameplay to boot!

The first one is a weak start story-wise though, but the gameplay is still fun and the later games do much better when it comes to it. I'm not saying it's bad, but if you compare the first game to any of the other games', it does seem lackluster.

Harvest Moon is pretty fun if you're into that kind of thing. It's the only GBA game that I still pick up and play now and then.

Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1-2
Strategy RPG mecha series with a distinct combat system involving multiple weapons of various ranges and effects mounted on each unit. Very dramatic and cinematic plotlines.

Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars
Another SRPG, with a Gundam-esque plot and a unique and slightly bizarre first person combat system where you manually dodge or aim attacks.

Metroid: Zero Mission
Probably doesn't need to be mentioned, but one of the finest of the series and in my opinion better than Fusion.

Monster Rancher Advance 1-2
The forgotten monster training series, with a more literal take on it. Feeding, training, disciplining, entering in tournaments and keeping your monsters well. Going bankrupt is a distinct possibility if you fail to win tournaments and earn prize money. The battle system takes time to get used to, as it is based on distance and positioning to determine attacks so a level of personal skill with the controls is necessary. Gets sad when monsters get too old and need to be retired.

Wario Land 4
Surprisingly good platformer with interesting mechanics and frankly nightmarish enemy and boss designs.

Games previously mentioned or that likely don't need a writeup;

Final Fantasy 1-6
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Mega Man Battle Network
Fire Emblem / Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones(♥)
Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis
Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon
Advance Wars
Golden Sun
Tales of Phantasia (Though I prefer the SNES version)
Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland

Games that may interest you but I have limited personal experience with, or are divisive;

Boktai: The Sun is in Your Hands
Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone
Summon Knight: Swordcraft Story 1-2
Rebelstar: Tactical Command (Simplified, linear X-COM)
Scurge: Hive
Robopon (Pokemon-like monster collecting)
Astro Boy: Omega Factor (Yeah, trust me)
