Magma 145 tiles down
« on: July 24, 2013, 12:39:35 am »

Is it even conceivable to get it to the surface?

We'd need 17 waterwheels to drive a pumpstack, plus a few extra to power the connections. Or we could make the most epic cave-in of the century to get everyone killed. Hmm.

HUGE MAGMA-PUMPSTACK MAN, I JUST DID IT, AND IF I CAN DO IT, SO CAN YOOOOU. (P.s. you best create a huge magma trap to drop onto the entire embark just in case something bad does happen.)

I don't think I've ever managed to get magma that wasn't at least 150~ tiles down so the only time I really get to play with it is when I embark on a volcano.

Magma pumpstack is the best bet. It hasn't really failed me.

If you have even a brook, power isn't really much of an object.  I've frequently made batteries of 27 or more whaterwheels and then walled them in with a ceiling to make the power plant secure from acts of goblin and dwarf alike.  I suppose it might be harder if you've got to set up perpetual motion machines rather than just using nature's.  A lot of people like magma pistons, but if you've got sand you can make a pump stack out of renewable green glass and draw directly from the Magma Sea.  Put a grate over the lowest hole and you'll even be safe from magma critters since they can't building-destroy from below.

Magma pistons work well if you're prepared. It teleports magma.

Tempted to pump stack. If magma pistons work like I remember reading about, I think pumps are safer knowing me.

I need to try these things.

What about a pressure plate that pokes out the Support that holds up the magma piston? Invader steps on it, is instantly drowned in magma?

If you don't want to bring magma to your fort, bring your fort to the magma.

In my current fortress, the goal is to try using Evicted Saint's method (thanks ES!) to get the magma into a cart, and then use impulse ramps to get it "upstairs" to the main fort.  0 power, almost no FPS hit...

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

I'm always partial to magma pistons in these situations. You can make them reusable with water/obsidian farm and some planning. Now to go force drain the magma sea...

!!Minecart in a wheelbarrow magma transport system!! Powerless, efficient, great for setting up a forge.

Yeah, definitely one of these ideas is worth doing. I was just thinking it would slow the fort to a crawl.
