I new migrant I just got likes slade. He also likes bismith... bolts gauntlets and amulets. He has no weapon preference. I want him to mood me a warhammer or a whip. I have slade (thank you curious underground structure!) I have heard that slade functions both like a metal and like a stone. Do I need to turn him into a mason or a weaponsmith?

Weaponsmith, preferrentially one making hammers. (Dwarves can't make whips).

After he has become a weapon smith, and possibly after making several good quaity hammers, when he moods he will have a passable chance of making a hammer.

Just pen him up in a burrow containing only slade and a smithery before he moods, and save before hand for save scumming.

Yeah, but the dwarf doesn't have a weapon preference.  It's easier to get him to make a hammer.

Does Slade even still count as a metal?  I know it used to be somehow both a metal and a stone, but I'm not sure if that was fixed.

What nobody's mentioned is that slade can only be obtained by bugs in the game, if there still are any of that nature.

If it *is* still a metal (and useable as such without refinement), you could force any moody smith who doesn't demand a particular metal to use Slade, thus getting slade war hammers out of hammer-liking dwarves without metal prefs.

As to the bugs... There's still a solid slade mining bug IIRC.

I built staircases on the next zlvl down to get at the slade. There is much more slade to mine.

I have three slade artifacts so far, a door, a ring, and a scepter.

Oddity: Slade when mined shows up as an ore, but once it shows up in a stockpile it appears as bars. See the first and second pick. Those grey = are slade, and the grey * are also slade.

Update: This oddity isn't true. The grey = are stockpile... and I'm an idiot.

Now we can only hope he forges the weapon by which the world shall be unmade.  Even if it's a "lesser" weapon (like a sword), it should still be effective at crushing enemies due to its massive weight.  Though Slade does have a max edge value...

Trial 1: He grabs adamantine. Now he is going for rough gems.  There was adamantine in my slade burrow.

you could always forbid every metal except for the slade.

Ok, I have a save at the moment the dwarf moods. He goes to the forge and claims it, and then demands adamantine wafers, logs, cloth, and gems, the same thing he put on his axe.  After 4 trials, he is always demanding the exact same things.
