Mostly they involve using the non-mages as sacrifices for high-power Blood Magic spells or blood batteries.

Well, blood magic can do healing magic and the like, but it needs somewhere to take the energy to cause the healing factor from, usually another being. You can manipulate blood to make someone faster, stronger, and generally just better, but this tears up muscles and the like without aforementioned healing factor.

Generally blood magic is much better at murder than helping people.
