There was actually a pen and paper game I played once where it was possible to make gunpowder golems.
...mind if I borrow that for a RTD I'm planning? It's centred on a world literally powered by gunpowder, so that is actually friggin perfect.
This world sounds interesting. Please elaborate?

Unfortunately, it was never actually published, it was just something that some of my more distant relatives made by themselves, and I got to try it out a couple times.
Although it had some cool systems in it that I'll likely incorporate into various games at some point.

It actually started because someone mentioned that Steampunk was almost always centred in Europe or America, but not some place like Japan or China. To which somebody responded with:

Quote
Asia doesn't necessarily need steampunk to be awesome & amazing...they have gunpowder! Rofl. I'm definitely going to be thinking about asian steampunk for the next few days.

This left me wondering how that would work... and so I went and strung some things together. Here they are:

And that is the tip of the iceberg. Thoughts & ideas are welcome via PM, as I don't want to clutter another games OOC thread with stuff for my own.

Oversized weapons make my mouth water. If there was a game for this I'd play it.

Patience! I'm working on it. I've never tried to host a RTD, but it can't be any harder than hosting a Scout Camp. *Shivers*

Edit: As soon as I have a geographic map drawn out, I'll start it. Gimme a few days.

Or a forum game...

On that note I should probably continue refining the rules for that SCP thing I was thinking of doing. Which is gonna be hard as I only got input on how missions should be made.

Aw, I was hoping the literal world was literally powered by gunpowder. Well, let me take a look at your ideas.

Quote
-Car Engines work by igniting a bit of gasoline to propel a piston, which in turn propels an axle. Replace gasoline with gunpowder. And back away, as fast as you can. This would be difficult IRL, because while gasoline is a liquid, gunpowder is in granular form.
Also, gunpowder is typically intended to be explosive in confined spaces. Those pistons would make excellent gun barrels, if you didn't mind your engine being more useful as a deathtrap than a weapon.

Clothing

This seemingly 'innocuous' category suddenly becomes important when the world is powered by an explosive!

I'd consider it a given that people living in such a world would quickly learn to wear armour that would probably be ceramic, and similar to RL bullet proof armour. This would make them more durable, and our traditional calibers would be less effective. This will obviously give rise to clunky, oversized weapons for more !!FUN!!. I have pages of ideas for clothing, so I'll stop here.
Aw.
Which makes me wonder...what culture is this? More Western like most steampunk, more Eastern like implied at the top, or something left-field like Mesoamericanish or African?

The Orient is well known to have had great metalworkers, especially for their swords.
They are also known for their highly flammable houses. I remember reading that tens of thousands of houses in one Japanese town burnt down sometime in the 20th century from someone spilling her wok...on a rainy day.

Still, metal buildings do make sense.

What else do you need to know? Once you can make a plot and such, the rest is mostly just decoration. If you screw it up badly enough, it's going to suck, but it doesn't need to be too special.

I suppose I have enough... Besides a design for the character sheets and proper rules for how things work.

The rules are the really decorative part I was referring to. KISS. If you don't mind having to make a bunch of ad hoc rulings on the fly, you really don't need any. As for character sheets, whatever you want the players to have figured out plus whatever the rules require.

You can even borrow rules from elsewhere. Got a GURPS book handy? Borrow from that. "You have 150 points. Strength costs 10 per point, Dexterity costs 20, Constitution costs 10, skills..." Or however complex you want. Don't have a GURPS book? Borrow some of Einsteinian Roulette's side stuff and run an RtD-ish game--or just run a plain-vanilla RtD! The rules don't matter much, as long as they're non-broken and fairly fair.

Oh, and you know, make the players start in one place.  :P

((For those not in the know, GWG has ran two previous games that died due to the characters getting shitty rolls [which is made worse by the harsh interpretation of the rolls] for finding the other PCs.))

Thank you GWG, for the feedback. You have points and ideas in there, so I'm going to review:

It actually started because someone mentioned that Steampunk was almost always centred in Europe or America, but not some place like Japan or China. To which somebody responded with:

That is actually a great idea, but I'm only going to do one game at a time for now. If it's any consolation, the world is pretty unstable- Gunpowder needs Sulphur, which is commonly found near Volcanos. I looked up plate tectonics, so expect some nasty earthquakes if I can figure out how'd that work as a roll every turn.

I figured as much. But the idea was too good to give up, and the idea of adventurers having the car they tried to hotwire blow up in their faces (on a 1-2?) was quite amusing. However, I expect them to walkrun like mad/ride horseback for the most part, like normal people.

I was going for 'Fuedal Japan' feel at first, to be honest. I'm planning on a research binge on that era soon, but have yet to do anything extensive yet. They hold peace and tranquility as an ideal, among other things, which makes sense if you live in such a explosive and volatile world.

Also, that link leads to 'Mayinatec' trope page, which doesn't exist? I put it in google, so would I be correct in saying it is similar to Mayan and Aztéc?

They used paper for walls and doors, so I'm not surprised. But they weren't alone in that 'inferno destroying town' jig- Chicago and London come to mind.

That said, I'll probably have the stable regions be made of wood, as well as shrines and monasteries.

I have no problem with improv, thank the heavens. Even the map I'm making is geared towards this- I'm going to put settlements on the map on the go. It's drawn in pencil, but I have some art programs in case someone gets the idea of trying to blow apart the tectonic plates I should need to change anything major, or (please spare me!) retcon.

Again, anyone with any comments or ideas is welcome to send me a PM. Please.

Edit: When I said traditional calibers would be ineffective, I forgot to say that they'd obviously scale up the caliber.

The Last Hero?
Maybe I'll do another, similar ISG if I can find a good way to make the...say, I have RPG Maker, I bet I could figure something out with that...once I've completed Thawed, probably.

Also, that link leads to 'Mayinatec' trope page, which doesn't exist? I put it in google, so would I be correct in saying it is similar to Mayan and Aztéc?
And Incan.
Here. I forgot a c.

True, but it wasn't raining. Which is really the part that sells the story. Is it unfair to suggest that Eastern architecture is unusually flammable? I think not.

Quote
That said, I'll probably have the stable regions be made of wood, as well as shrines and monasteries.
Indeed. Heck, having true-to-form Asian buildings, flammability and all, might be common in areas without as much gunpowder tech...if only for the hilarity when someone brings a fire-belching monstrosity into town.

I really wish you'd have kept that ISG going GWG. I loved that game.

The Last Hero's Apprentice or something like that. The Something Hero's Apprentice.
