I started off with The Orange Box during 2005-6; and my replacement account (long story; it's why some of you have 2 of me on your friend lists) kicked me back on in 2009 with the Valve Complete Pack.

Half-Life 2, when it was still new, and Garry's Mod were what got me into it all.

Hmm... on September 16, 2008 I installed Portal and played that; loved it; but Steam didn't click. It wasn't until 26 February, 2009 that I downloaded Team Fortress 2, and was compleely hooked. I went on buying many games from that point on.

A few of those give me memories. Noteworthy...
- Section 8. (7 Sep, 2009) I am very sad that the game, or it's sequel, never really took off. I had so much fun with those.
- Nation Red (26 Sep 2009) - still one of the best arcade shooters I have played. I should do that again...
- 6 Sep, 2009 - Majesty 2 preorder. So much dissapointment there...
- Red Orchestra. 13 Dec, 2009 - Changed the way I played games, especially FPS games
- Dawn of War 2 - 12 Mar, 2010. I miss this game, and I really miss THQ.

Nothing else really stands out, but ahh the memories...
Also, I can really tell my financial situation at the time by my Steam history.

My first game on steam was Empire Total War which was absolute garbage on release and was one of the reasons I didn't buy another triple A game for about 3 years. I didn't like the idea of steam much at the time so I uninstalled it along with empire.

The first game I actually purchased through the steam store was Terraria. And then came the winter sale where most of my grumblings about steam were smothered under a mountain of super cheap and immensely fun indie games.

Although I will say that of them all, I had the least problems with THQ and more of their titles than other publishers. I liked what they tended to greenlight. Their DLC policy kind of sucked (more DLC, MOAR DLCsssssssssss), but they didn't have super asinine DRM or try to ape Steam.

Steam downloaded with the retail version of Civ 5, which irritated me massively, until I bought Portal. And then Portal 2. And then Terraria. And then the summer sale came around. And I was hooked.

o.O That is literally the exact same sequence I went through, down to the games.  Civ5 from the retail version (with profound irritation at being forced to use Steam and its bloated, glitchy client), with my first actual purchase being the Portal + Portal 2 package nine months later, then Terraria half a month after that, then the summer sale swings in and I buy up The Guild II, Fallout: New Vegas, and a bunch of Civ5 DLC in the span of a few days.  Well, I wouldn't say I'm hooked, per se; given the choice, I will almost always go with a less obtrusive vendor like Gamergate, GoG, or the like (that is, not only do I prefer to buy games from them if they have a version that avoids Steam's DRM system, but I'll buy preferentially from them even if the game is Steam-only and all I am purchasing is a Steam activation key), but I've definitely lost a lot of my old animosity towards Steam.

HL2. Well, technically I had to get Steam to play HL2, I didn't buy HL2 on Steam.

Been a member since the 16th of September 2003 when I installed HL2.
First actual digital purchase was X3: Terran conflict, haven't bought a physical game since.

I feel like it's better not to know the total that I've spent on games, especially if I were one of those people who play all their games on Steam. It'd probably make me a tiny bit sad. There's one multiplayer game I play that has had a feature request to see how many times you've donated to the game, but the creators refuse every time because they believe it'd hurt business. It's sort of like that.

You got it. I severely doubt Relic will find the same creative freedom elsewhere. And I didn't mind the DLC's, they felt reasonable in terms of cost/benefit. Overall, I felt like THQ was a balance to many other publishers by their sheer existence; with that gone, there are no non-corrupt major publishers left. And yeah, I feel pretty safe saying THQ was not corrupt as I have read many things by their top folks, and interacted with their community managers.
