Your first Steam purchase
« on: July 22, 2013, 07:17:12 pm »

What got you started on Steam?
You can find your purchase history by clicking the arrow by your name in the top-right of steam, going to account details.

I thought I started Steam for STALKER, but my first purchase was actually Garry's Mod. Garry's Mod is one of my least-played games, amusingly.

Oh neat.
My first was on 29th Aug 2009, TF2 and GMod. Followed swiftly by Portal for free.

I bought Half-Life 2, which came on 5 CD-Roms and needed Steam. back then Steam was so, so, so very awful. They tried to have steam friends list and community but it was so broken they removed it for... I believe several years. Then steam started picking up steam... haha... and well, now it's probably the biggest digital distribution thingy for games on PC boxes =p

... Terraria 4 pack, back in '11. Gave one to a friend, one to ToME4's developer, and the last to B12 via giveaway.

Terraria. First time I learned that Steam existed. Only reason I installed it was because Steam was sort of necessary to play the game... then I found out how epic Steam was.

The same. It really pissed me off - we had dialup at the time. Even after installing from disk, I had to wait for a few hundred megs more to download.

Then I found my laptop could barely run HL2 and basically forgot about Steam for several years. Fast forward, now I'm up to a not-insignificant library.

Steam downloaded with the retail version of Civ 5, which irritated me massively, until I bought Portal. And then Portal 2. And then Terraria. And then the summer sale came around. And I was hooked.

L4D, Nov 21, 2008.

It says I bought Hinterland on Sept 30, 2008, but I think that's bullshit because I didn't buy that until like a year later.

I think that's how it was for everyone hahaha.

At first it's irritation at having to download bloatware, irritation at how much system resources it uses, etc.

Then realizing just how much value it provides.

I still don't understand people complaining about system resource usage, unless you have absolutely no RAM.

I suppose having absolutely no RAM is possible, but RAM is one of the cheapest elements in a PC.

I got Steam for Audiosurf, soon followed by Portal when they were giving that out for free. I wish they'd hurry up with Audiosurf Air already, the original doesn't exactly have a long shelf-life :P
