First was the CounterStrike 1 Anthology back in the mid-noughties. Which had a missing character in the activation key. Fun times.

Mine would be...Metro2033 or Fallout New Vegas. Don't remember which, but I received them both at around the same time (NV's release date).

I got Counter Strike Source on Sep 12, 2007.

It looks like somehow I got a hand full of other games before I started paying though. Not sure how to see when my account was created.

Half-Life 2, Disciples II Gold, Railroad Tycoon II: Platinum, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, Darwinia / Uplink, Dark Messiah, and
Half-Life Platinum Pack.

Internet in the war zone has gotten better. I purchased and downloaded "Walking Mars" on December 14, 2012 from Afghanistan. Granted it was a pretty established base.

First Steam game was Half-Life 2 retail copy when it came out (or at least a month after), next was a retail copy of the Orange Box. First digital purchase was Audiosurf.

4 Oct 2008 - Hinterland, was according to that list the first game I bought on steam, not entirely correct though since the first games I bought for it was the orange box which was what lead me to reinstall steam. I had it previously as well back when I played CS and DoD though but that was an account I have forgotten the name and login of a loooong time ago.

I don't remember the date. I installed steam when I installed my retail copy of the orange box. My first purchase after that was Gmod.

E: apparently half of the people here installed steam with the orange box.

I think mine was Modern Warfare 2. Now I have the badge for owning over 100 games, just wish I had the time to play half of them.

Retail HL2, I got my 8 year service badge. First thing actually purchased through Steam was probably GMod.

My father bought retail HL2 and EP1, then Orange Box, so he gifted me HL2 (I mostly wanted it for mods).

First game I BOUGHT on Steam was, I think, Mirror's Edge on a sale (this was actually the second game I bought online, after Minecraft, once I got my own bank account).

Condition Zero on June 12, 2004. Steam was truly terrible. It was always turning on when I didn't want it to, and it sucked up so much RAM for the time.

Somebody gifted me the extra parts of his Orange Box in 2008 or whenever that came out, but I didn't buy anything until 2009. Can't recall when it started to be necessary for Steam to be active all the time in order for me to do anything. I certainly didn't think this was how it was going to be 9 years ago.

My first purchase purchase on Steam was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and I had bought it just yesterday. What got me started though was Maplestory and Everquest. Like I had perhaps said yesterday I'm loving this newfangled iTunes for video games service and thus renounce my disliking of paying for downloads - as long as it is from Steam.

Doing a more detailed sweep, and I have spent 387$ over 4 years, with my most FPD going to Gmod, with total of 0.007.

Halflife 2 dvd retail copy on 23 November 2004 then activated halflife, blueshift, opposing forces and counterstrike from my existing cd's.

The first thing I purchased on steam was condition zero in order to complete my collection of games that were available on steam at the time.

I still miss that time when the list of mods available for download through steam matched the number of games you could buy.

My first retail game was Empire: Total War, which was a very underrated game. My first downloaded game was binding of isaac.
