Wait. What's this Twitter thing?
Nothing to concern an eldritch abomination.

As for the advertising, it's good. The menacing cliffs of difficulty curve that also menace with spikes of ASCII should be enough to drive away any obnoxious minecraft players.

Yeah, part of the unique aspect of the Bay 12 Forums is that it is protected from the majority of internet stupidity by the difficulty precipice. Personally, I don't think it will have much effect.

I don't play MC (I tried, but I really like DF or RollerCoasterTycoon 1 more).

But: More players is a good thing
Unless its the usual public CS player. ;)

Well good on Notch for recommending DF. I haven't played Minecraft but it's made a lot of people happy and you can't really argue with that. I hope a bunch of them come over and give DF a try, it's free! You can't argue with that either.

My motto!

It it's free, then fuck it, give it a DL then decide if you like it(Unless it's a virus)

Good on him, though I doubt more than five percent of the people who try at his suggestion will stick with it.

Minecraft was heavily inspired by DF after all, there's no doubt Notch would recommend playing it.

Only took him years to mention.

I'm pretty sure he mentioned it plenty of times before he got famous enough for us to notice, gave up, and just recently remembered to again.

I know he had mentioned DF as inspiration at least once around the time Alpha came out.

Notch has mentioned DF as an inspiration quite a few times, and there are mods that attempt to make MC more like DF.  I even made a mod once to put the 40d magma pipes, chasms, and bottomless pits into Minecraft.  Might keep on doing that after I'm out of grad school.

Some of the posters in this thread need to come down off their high horses a bit.  DF is not great because just because it's hard, and you are not better than other people because you learned to play it.  DF is great and astounding because of its depth of gameplay.

Having taken a couple programming classes, I can tell you that if your software or game is considered difficult because of its interface, that's not considered a good thing.  You shouldn't hold DF's learning curve up as an example of what makes it good unless you're talking about difficulty stemming from actual gameplay.  Even then, if you act like you're somehow better than others because you climbed the learning cliff, and call people who play simpler games idiots, then all it really does is make you, and other DF players, look like a bunch of jerks.  I can tell you that jerks rank somewhat lower in many people's opinions than people who don't get complex games or software.

iirc, Notch started Minecraft as an attempt to make a simplified 3D DF, and actually attempted to recruit at least one of our forumites (i'll let you guess who, only clue is they're currently active) as a staff member.
...Threetoe?

I bet it's that ToadyOne guy.

Putnam or Deon as the keyword is forumite

oh man I wish

and Toady's a forumite!

Way back when Minecraft was still in (in[f]dev?) some alpha-esque state, Notch had stated that his vision for Minecraft was to be a more accessible version of Dwarf Fortress. The original plan for the game was much more ambitious than what's available now, note the botched experience system - the game was meant to have skills, stats and other forms of character progression - but the current speed of development seems indicative that the more interesting features of Minecraft will be forgotten entirely.

On a brighter note, the Minecraft community houses some very brilliant and talented individuals, and the ones that would fit our community are the ones that enjoy Dwarf Fortress. It's rare that we get anyone causing disturbances because the one thing that brought us all here is the one thing keeping those who would cause disturbances out. Anyone who comes here lacking the intent to ruin our fun should be welcomed, not shunned.

There is no one reason.

As well discounting difficulty and learning curve as a source of appreciation would be a folly. While there is something to say about games that are overly complicated, there is something to marvel at when a game actually asks you to learn how the game is played and isn't afraid of throwing difficulty at you to do so.

Depth without difficulty can feel like an ocean as deep as a shallow pool. While depth without learning can feel like you aren't doing anything at all.

Do not underestimate difficulty and the learning curve in defining how good the game actually is.

Especially in today's era of incredibly easy gaming where being "hard" is considered a feature and not a quality.

I have a funny story about Minecraft, which I finally tried just recently. Very fun in its own way.

Anyway, one of the things that used to annoy me at no end in DF, was when my dwarves used to dig out the tile they were standing on and injure or kill themselves. Finally that ridiculous stupidity was fixed at some point.

Then when I tried Minecraft, one of the first things I did was dig out under myself and fell 60 tiles into lava. Oh... so that's what it feels like. *blush*
