Some of the posters in this thread need to come down off their high horses a bit.  DF is not great because just because it's hard, and you are not better than other people because you learned to play it.  DF is great and astounding because of its depth of gameplay.

I consider myself better than your average minecraft-player mostly because I've seen the Yogscast's comment section, though. :P

Seriously though, both minecraft and DF suffer from fuckawful interfaces. Were anyone able to figure out minecrafts crafting system on their own? When people complain about MC being overly simplistic I don't think it's so much because they think playing DF gives them magical awesomeness powers as because there really isn't a lot to do in MC at this stage. Build house, grind materials, fight tedious final boss. Minecrafts saving grace is mostly its social aspect and mods.

I love Minecraft pretty much solely for the Achievement Hunters' Lets Plays.

There is no one reason.

As well discounting difficulty and learning curve as a source of appreciation would be a folly. While there is something to say about games that are overly complicated, there is something to marvel at when a game actually asks you to learn how the game is played and isn't afraid of throwing difficulty at you to do so.

Depth without difficulty can feel like an ocean as deep as a shallow pool. While depth without learning can feel like you aren't doing anything at all.

Do not underestimate difficulty and the learning curve in defining how good the game actually is.

Especially in today's era of incredibly easy gaming where being "hard" is considered a feature and not a quality.

Fair enough, but that's not what I'm really talking about.  I'm talking about how people who play MC but not DF are being called idiots on this thread.  It's pointless and it does us no credit.  It also not only does us no good, but can actually do harm, since continued development of DF depends on donations, which depends on new people discovering the game, and not being driven away by people who think knowing DF's interface is a reason to act like a jerk.  I mean, really, in the wider world, knowing how to play DF is not an indicator of personal merit.  No one cares if you (not you personally) can play a video game with a difficult interface.  Acting like it makes you superior is ridiculous.

Diso Faintpuzzles was born in 120.  Although accounts vary it is universally agreed that Diso was chosen by fate as the vanguard of destiny.

In the early spring of 143 Diso began wandering the wilds.

In the early spring of 143 Diso starved to death in the Horn of Striking.

iirc, Notch started Minecraft as an attempt to make a simplified 3D DF, and actually attempted to recruit at least one of our forumites (i'll let you guess who, only clue is they're currently active) as a staff member.
...Threetoe?

I bet it's that ToadyOne guy.

Putnam or Deon as the keyword is forumite

oh man I wish

and Toady's a forumite!

but yeah it's solifuge

No, he's a forumtite. He just hangs from the forum ceiling, you know? Like a toad. That hangs from the ceiling.

Brace yourselves.

Though more donations for Toady can only be a good thing. Might even get another epic à la BoatMurdered out of it.
