There's also Star Trek: Klingon Academy, but that's more of a starsip simulator than crew management and such.

Also it's old and buggy and addictive

Drox operative is just Diablo IN SPACE with even more grindy mechanics. I don't think that's quite what she's after.

The RPS article linked mentioned Guns of Icarus...

...

Oh man, if we could get a Bay12 group going, I would so play that! Who needs artificially intelligent crew members when you can have REAL incompetence!

I was just searching for some old abandonware games that had this, but I couldn't find them unfortunately. There was one about space exploration, and you had to select your crew at the start, and take care of them. I don't remember much more than this, only that it was really tough. Some of them were cyborgs, and others were actually human, I think.

I would also love for there to be more FTL-likes. I keep daydreaming about this game where you run a ship that is so complex that you need multiple people to actually make the ship function adequately - so it'd be multiplayer. Kind of like the Battlecruisers series, but ... done better?

Aw man.... but then you could build your own thing, which is one of the "persistent" things I feel SS13 is missing?

And it could play like Starshatter, or even a simplified version like The Wager, where you're just out to discover things, but sometimes you need to fight!

If only I could code this...... perhaps one day!

You might enjoy Megatraveller 1 and Megatraveller 2 if you haven't seen them before.  Very dated now, and very much RPGs rather than spaceship management (as befits their origins), but enjoyable if you can get past the rough exterior.

Also, Traveller and its ilk had one of my favourite character generating approaches ever, and the two games above replicate it to some extent.  You watch/control your characters living their lives prior to the game beginning, with bonuses and maluses and skills and attributes etc changing accordingly.  It's one of the few games where your characters can die before the game even starts.

Edit: I recall Whale's Voyage (Let's Play) does something similar.  Again, though, RPG focus mainly.

I remembered the name! It was called Iron Seed.

Quote
Inspired by the classic exploration game Starflight, on the face of it Ironseed appeared to be yet another space adventure based around crew management and planetary surveying, but whereas Starflight had set the early benchmark and Star Control had created a fun and fanciful alternative, Ironseed was very much darker and more complex. No better, necessarily, but undeserving of the subsequent obscurity.

Wiki link, website for the abandoned sequel + sourcecode, and an interview.

I remember having some good times!

website for the abandoned sequel + sourcecode.
are we expected to compile it from source code? Or is that for the original?

That's for the original, but you can still find Iron Seed at a variety of abandonware sites. There's also some patches floating around, but honestly I don't know how to apply them. The github code has the latest version for sure. Also, you'll need Dosbox. I am very tempted to fire this up again!
