Could you guys discuss the Prospector RL in the appropriate thread?


On topic, I present you Freelancer. It's an old game, has got a ridiculous amount text on it's Wikipedia page, and there is an unofficial sequel coming our way in Q4 of this year, under the name of Star Citizen. I played Freelancer a little bit, and as it always is with the games I'm willing to get no matter what cost, I got bored quickly. It's good, though - trading, space combat, ship customization are all in there.

Freelancer is to FTL as HALO is to Supreme Commander.

It's an action shooter with trade elements tagged on the side, has no coordination over crew or real equipment or ANYTHING like that.

Secondly:
Ascii Sector
Its a realtime rogueish-like (I stress ish and like. Its rather soft on death, and random encounters are rather lack luster.), based around solid trading mechanics, an enjoyable ship combat system, that includes boarding enemy ships (which I have yet to do, but really want to), an innovative group combat system based around your skill and your character's skill, and grinding. There is ALOT of grinding involved, if you're not willing to take risks, or are simply bad at combat, which can get rather difficult at times.

Edit: Also, the world will change around you: pirates will muscle into Confederation space, and large space battles will ensue. Fleets of both pirates and Confeds will fly around, and it's rather common to run into them in their respective space.

This seems quite interesting, but not very newbie friendly, is on my watch list for further development though.

I'll agree that FTL is pretty similar to the Infinite Space games.  Wierd Worlds is the better of the two that are available now, and the kickstarted sequel looks promising also.

no crew management as such, but ship (and fleet) customization and detailed battles with a turn based random map where you jump to a system and get a random event.

Similarly, there is Flotilla which is a 3d and has "simultaneous turn" based combat.  follows the same strategic map formula of "jump here, get a random event".  Made by the Atom Zombie Smasher guys.

Prospector is pretty boss, I got far in it several times, but its a roguelike in that it is random, capricious, and hard.  Not all planets blow up.  for an easier more exploratory game, cheat.  Its still hard with 10 million credits, or whatever.

Transcendence is lots of fun, but it's really only similar in that it is a roguelike in space.  Its a top down real time action game, more similar to StarControl in how it plays.  its roguelike in its semi-randomness, and that all the items in the game are pretty much direct parallels to finding loot / potions / scrolls / equipment in a traditional fantasy slash-em-up.

If you like that, you'll probably also like NAEV which is basically an Escape Velocity clone.  unfinished, but still fun to play.

I think I recall there being some sort of really old Star-Trek game or some such that involved a lot of micromanagement. Had to divert energy all over the place, focus shields and weapons, shuffle crew, etc. If it's actually a thing I'm remembering, then I also think that the game was limited in its GUI so I'm not sure if it's actually worth playing. I don't mean that it's lacking in bells and whistles, I mean that the GUI may not have been properly designed.

My brain could also be hijacking my memories. It happens sometimes.

Also, yeah, Freelancer is completely different from what she's asking for.

For modern games, it sounds like your best bet is going to be X4 or Star Citizen, although neither have a focus on what you're really looking for, unfortunately (although X4 might get the closest).

I think this was Star Trek Bridge Commander  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek:_Bridge_Commander

I had a few different friends interested in it, but we never got around to making it happen.  The onle you linked -- Union -- looks pretty cool too.

.... maaaaayyyybbbbeeeeee, but I'm pretty sure it's not. This game was almost surely pre-2000, and I'm not sure that it would even have animations. Of course, I'm going by screenshots I think I remember seeing either in PC Gamer or CGW when they were talking about old games, rather than anything that was current.

Well, this is an area where I've had a bit of previous experience so let me take a few more shots.  need to dig through the way-back machine of my brain a bit here, but check some of these out:

Begin 2, about as old and low tech as I remember for this type of game.  Any simpler and youre just playing "trek" or "star raiders".  I guess Begin 1 was older, but I never played that one.  http://www.abandonia.com/games/909


I'm not sure this Moby article is correct, I clearly remember playing Star Fleet 2 on the Atari ST, but it sounds like only SF1 was made for that platform.  This was a super-detailed game that had hardly anything to do with Star Trek, but super lots of crazy micromanagement for the ship.  Bewildering arrays of features.  I only played one game in the series, which I thought was SF2 but I guess I might be wrong about that:  http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/star-fleet-series

Mmm, no, sorry. The Star Fleet stuff looks closer to what I'm thinking of, but it at least had graphics. Nothing 3D, but it wasn't ASCII and I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything other than the ship.

It might have just been some shareware throw-away thing rather than a more popular release. I'm actually starting to think that I played a demo or shareware/freeware of it way back in the day, couldn't figure it out and uninstalled.

I'm not sure it's worth figuring it out anyway. My memory is too foggy to come up with anything helpful, and it's probably not something that people would want to play.

I remember the KS game I mentioned! It's not... quite the same, and only currently available for Apple devices - but may be worth a look (Android coming "soon", PC coming "maybe eventually")

I backed this, and it's a severe disappointment to what the initially promised. It is now nothing more than an 'on the rails' tactical battle game with very little in the way of customisation or things to do.
So can you actually show what it promise but didnt do?

Puzzle Pirates? Actually reasonably a close idea to that, no space though! I wish they'd just straight up make a scifi version of that.

Quintet just popped onto my radar this week and as far as I can tell it's a free and somewhat more well designed version of Artemis, with a focus on online more than living room play. http://www.quintet.us/

The first and second of this series had quite some micromanagement.
