Roguelikes for Android?
« on: July 22, 2013, 07:16:55 am »

So, soon I'll have a journey  by car that'll probably take at least ten hours. I want to have something fun (Fun) to play that isn't arcadey or a falling sand game. Do you guys know any free roguelikes that'll work on an Android tablet?

There is Angband and the Angband Variants collection. Also, there is Nethack and SLASH'Em(a nethack variant), Zaga-33, and many others(about 100 if i recall). These are annoying to control however and i would only consider taking them if you have a tablet or an actual keyboard you can rig to it.

Angband seems like a good choice, since I'm already reading LOTR anyway. (For when my tablet and DS are out of power). Any other notable ones?

There is a rogue-like-like / puzzle-game called dungeon18, which is very simple & fun, on android.

The whole game revolves around who you improve your character (with levels and items), and the order killing order of ennemies...
I wouldn't advice it for a 2 hours straight gaming session, but it fills gaps easily ;)

wazhack. Its stick is ideal for ipad type devices. The phone droids are probably too small. google it. you can try it online. you can also try it for free. you only pay after you get to a certain point
powder is another free one you dont pay for until you get to a certain point. it kind of sets you up so its almost impossible to not have most of the gods hate you.

nethack HD has been ported to ipad and droid. This is a bit tricky to use with the interface. its easy to push the wrong place.

dungeon crawl stone soup was ported, but doesn't work too well on portables.

There is a simple, but fun, roguelike called Pixel Dungeon. It's either free or cheap, and works extremely well with touch screens. It may not last you 10 hours, but it will definitely help.

Here is where I found out about it, there are quite a few good suggestions there: (Warning: Reddit link)

EDIT: Apparently this is a newer thread than the one I looked at. With more suggestions. MUST DOWNLOAD.

Honestly Angband is about as true to Lord of the Rings as Nethack is.  If you removed all the LOTR references it wouldn't change anything.

I'm gonna echo some other sentiments that unless you've got a tablet roguelikes are going to be very, very difficult.  The screen's too small, the keyboard's too small, it takes forever to do anything, it's just not a good fit.

For that particular reason, get Pixel Dungeon. It is specifically designed for phones, and it works extremely well.

I have nothing but praise for Pixel Dungeon. The interface is so much better than any other roguelike I've tried for android. It's obvious the creator put a lot of effort into making the game suitable for its medium. The other roguelikes I tried felt cumbersome and didn't really seem well suited to play on my average sized phone.

The game feels well paced for an android game as well. The character creation is simplified, you pick a warrior a rogue or a mage. You don't make decisions when you level up (no skillpoints to allocate). This simple system works well for the fast pace of the game because you will be dying a lot. There's a lot of the stuff you'd expect from a roguelike - randomly generated levels, unidentified potions and scrolls, curses, traps, bosses...

It's really a great little game and to top it all off it is free, has no ads and requires no phone permissions.

There's a commercial one called Deadly Dungeons, seems to be a mix of roguelike and old-school RPG.  I haven't played it myself.

It's normally $0.99, but happens to be free on Amazon today.

As I said, I do have a tablet, so yay! I'll check those out, although probably not cata. I actually tried the mobile version of Stone Soup once, but I didn't like it too much.
