If you can do that, that's what I (confusingly) intended -- regular mining always leaves a floor, so you can't do it from below.  Channeling removes floors.

OK, either I'm missing something really obvious, or something is wrong.  I've built a staircase down to start my mine, but when I go down to build a staircase up, I can't place it.  The game says the area is 'Hidden.'  Any help?

You designate it, like you did with the down stairs.

Ramps do not allow you to dig next to the location. when you dig a ramp from down to up, you cannot excavate next to it. Only staircases work when going up.
Down works just fine though.

Ohhhhh, that makes sense.  I placed the downward stairs with 'site a building,' but that doesn't work with upward stairs underground.  Thanks a bunch.

Sorry toad but it is sort of a strange distinction.  Why in the world would there ever be such a thing as a "down" staircase that a dwarf can't go up?  Not consistent with real life, physics, or really anything I can think of. Not that I don't love your game.

a down staircase sticks halfway down into the ground, an up staircase sticks halfway up out of the ground

its not a staircase that one can only go in a down direction

Z-levels in DF are made of a wall stacked on top of a floor. An upwards staircase starts at the tile's floor and extends all the way through the wall, ending just below the floor of the z-level above. A downwards staircase starts at the tile's floor and extends all the way through it, ending just above the wall of the z-level below. An up/down staircase combines both.

If you want to dig out a 3d void from above, dig out the whole void as ramps first, then channel layer after layer, starting from the top. If you want to dig it out from below, use stairs instead.
