*ahem* uhm... how to tunnel down?
« on: October 29, 2007, 06:23:00 pm »

Maybe I am looking right past it or something, but I seem to be unable to figure out how to make a tunnel down into the earth. I have several down staircases that seem to not allow me to go down into them to mine out areas or anything.

I'm a little confused too, but this seemed to work for me:

1. Dig a downward staircase.
2. Shift + > to move the window down a level.
3. Dig an upward staircase beneath the downward one.

Then you should be able to dig around normally on that level.

You need to build an upstaircase underneath the downstaircase, then your dwarf will go down.

I'm having the opposite problem going up. I've built some ramps into one wall leading up and the next floor has the rock designated and flashing, but my miner dwarves have no idea how to get up there.

Next question: How do you dig a 3-dimensional void? If I dig out an open space under an existing open space, there's automatically a floor and ceiling between the two. How do I eliminate the floor/ceiling to get a larger opening in the rock? This is important for reservoirs.

Use the "channel" designation on a piece of floor to remove it.

Be aware that if you use this on an ordinary tile, it will remove both the floor and the body of the tile below it.

I dug out an area below a lake, but can't get my dwarves to tunnel up into the water. How can I remove the "floor" of the level above? It seems I can't designate anything on the water tile, and nothing I do on the lower level works.

Have you tried digging a stairway up?

When digging ramps up, the next square you dig out is adjacent to the one you are currently digging, not directly over.  When digging ramps down, you dig a ramp up on the next floor down.

Contrary to what Toady's movie would have you believe, it is not possible to dig up into the bottom of a lake. At least, not a surface lake. You cannot make any designations or building on the water tile, regardless of what's beneath it. This...makes me sad. Is it intentional, or a bug?

I have tried: designating an upward stairway under the lake, designating an upward ramp, building an upward stairway from rough blocks, and building an upward ramp from rough blocks. In all cases, I could not do anything with the 9 squares above the construction.

But whatever, the rest of it is pretty cool so far!

if your map freezes in winter it may be possible to dig a 'drain' through the ice into the area you want under it, just an idea.

Last time I checked, I could channel out a floor once I set up an ramp or upward stairway, and I could dig a downward stairway from below standing on an upward stairway.  If this is no longer the case, a new bug has arrived.

You can't dig up into a lake, but you can dig a tunnel and then lay a channel over it to the same effect.
