Searching for royalty-free music for use in Let's Plays
« on: July 22, 2013, 02:13:50 am »

Hi everyone :)

I wasn't really sure where best to pop down this discussion, but as it's focused around let's plays I figured that a few people who post here frequently may have experience with this, so I hope no one minds.

I've recently started a Dwarf Fortress let's play, but while I'm generally fine with playing with the in-game music on loop I thought it may be worth looking for some royalty free music that has a similar feel to it, either long enough to cover a whole episode (about 30 minutes) or just a bit of variety that I could stick in a playlist.

However, it occurred to me that I play and record a few rogue-likes, such as Catacylsm:DDA, and may well do more in the future, such as ADOM. Many rogue-likes don't have their own game music, so I thought I'd ask if anyone has come across any good sites where someone can go to look for free 'ambient' music that'd fit various games.

I'm aware of a few places myself, and will update this list as I find more or other people post:
- Newgrounds Audio portal
- Incompetech
- Jamendo
- Freesound.org

Cheers in advance for any help or advice anyone can offer :)

After more searching I've found another site with royalty free music, Incompetech. From what I understand most (if not all) of the music available on the site is made by the site's author, Kevin MacLeod, and includes a lot of information about how to deal with any issues that might arise due to incorrect copyright claims on YouTube.

I'll update the OP to include any other links I find, or links other people post :)

Might check jamendo. Seems to have at least some stuff under creative commons, which might work for you. Folks that did the music ToME4 is using (Celestial Aeon Project) has their stuff somewhere on there.

Incompetech is really all anyone could ever need :P Must be thousands of songs on there in just about every style and you can search for what you need really easily. Good licensing too.

incompete- Oh, you've already found that.

erm... Freesound.org? I know it mostly deals with sounds, but the last time I checked, there was some music there as well.
