Unlisted Vampires
« on: July 21, 2013, 11:06:00 am »

This is the fifth time I have recieved a message claiming "an animal has been drained of blood."  First a cavy pet, then a kitten, then a dog, and now two more stray cats. The second and subsequent times, it has said "been drained of blood by ingiz bisekkubuk."

I don't have an ingiz bisekkubuk. I don't have an ingiz bisekkubuk on my my citizens list or on my other creatures list (i thought it might be a ghost.)

I haven't lost any dwarves to it yet. I haven't the foggiest idea what it might be.

I have a curious underground structure that I rooted the undead out of, but have yet to pull the sword. The king arrived ~a year ago, and it was either after him or the subsequent migrant wave this started happening.  Maybe the dwarves started telling their dwarven children to behave or ingiz bisekkubuk will get em.

Vampires assume a false name when they immigrate to your fortress. Look through their thoughts, find the one who A: has no quarters (vamps won't take rooms for themselves) and B: needs a freaking drink (vamps still need booze, they just can't get any. Poor vamp.)

Ahh. That makes sense.

I found her, a rather unaccomplished marksdwarf. Being that she is content to drain animals, I'll let her go until she drains a dwarf. Then we will see if unaccomplished marksdwarf vampire can defeat two undead named elephants in the arena.

Update: And I forgot that undeads don't kill each other.

Update2: But an vampire can be ordered to attack an undead.

Wait what? Since when do vampires feed on animals?? Animals don't even sleep, do you have unconsciousness causing forgotten beast goo around, or something?

Yeah, that is what was so strange. She has killed 6 animals (mostly kittens) just in the past month. There was one FB that I killed a few years ago that emit drowsy dust or blood, and one that I killed a few years back released dust that made those afflicted vomit till they died.

There is a pool of FB blood in the main stairwell.  There is also a pile of frozen FB extract in the main stairwell. There is both FB blood and extract at the well that connects to the cavern water.

A cheaty way to deal with it is nickname them, check the gods that they worship and look for their nickname if somebody has been turned into a vampire by them. You should be suspicious if they have lots of absent 'close' relatives (Children, spouses) or too many affiliations for their job. Don't bother checking 'Cheatily' if you have no suspicions.

It killed your animals? They always gravitate to the nearest Legendary I have.

I haven't gotten a vampire in ages, but in one of my old forts I got three at once, and another shortly after. I lost four cats to them and just sort of ignored them. Then I lost a legendary minor, my legendary +4 armorer, one of my best military dwarves, and some nobody planter. I took measures after that. turned out two of them were in the military, probably because of those attribute boosts they get when they become a vampire. Had them all thrown into a pit and made them fight each other, except one who spent two years in jail before getting hammered.

I Unfortunate Accidented him after he killed a kid. Sometimes I lock a vampire in a plush, Michael Jacksonesque playhouse with beds and toys and such, and I have him be the manager of the dwarven childcare unit. But all my children had already been murdered by the undead hoard, so I just had him fight an elephant corpse.

That's what you get for only giving legendaries individual bedrooms :P

As i understand it, a thirsty vampire will target an 'unconscious' unit, regardless of species and presumably loyalties. So a syndrome that causes sleepiness (which will send animals to sleep for a while) can indeed make your lifestock valid lunch options for vampires. You could even try getting some sleep sand on merchants and have the vampire eat them.
Of course, science demands you get a wagon to track through the syndrome material and see what happens. Most likely, the wagon will be immune due to its wagonnish body plan or auto-scuttle the moment it falls unconscious, but a vampire draining a wagon would be hilarious.

Well, now my cats have started to rot out. And I have no idea how to either identify or clean the extract responsible. It is getting really annoying.

You could try using pressurized water to flush it into into the caverns. The other option is to micromanage your Dwarves into cleaning it them selves.

The end result of this fortress is (hopefully) to drop all of the embark that doesn't sit above an adamantine spire or the curious underground structure onto the SMR, so I'll just have seven, 140 zlvl tall towers. Hopefully, this will solve my rotting extract problem.
