How to store hair thread?
« on: July 20, 2013, 12:12:58 am »

I don't see it in any of the stockpiles. So how can I transport and use it in my hospital then?
Raw hair is refuse but is the thread as well? That would suck as everything rots away in a refuse stockpile...

While hair *is* labelled as refuse, it can be made into workable thread using one of the farmer-type workshops :)

Just make a stockpile with the needed specifications.

Which are?

I had this question as well.  A stockpile set to cloth has thread selections for plant, yarn (wool), silk and metal (of a special kind).

Once you've spun hair into hair thread, what is the stockpile settings to store that thread?

I think you can store it in a refuse stockpile which is set to accept item type "thread" and material "hair/wool".

Somehow I don't think bear or hyena hair are so terrifying.

It counts as some kind of thread from my thread stockpile hoarding it. Cloth/thread stockpile's a bit broken, and you'd have to forbid stuffs before setting hospital stash to make sure it'll be specificlly taken.

Well, you didn't mention it was bear or hyena hair. :|

Well unless you have messed with Dwarven ethics to allow butchering of sapients, you aren't going to be able to obtain sapient-hair. So yeah, animal hair.

That eases my conscious.
Although given the forum we are on, I guess that the concept of a concentration camp is not too far off.

Thread re-rail...

But won't this rot the thread away over time (being a refuse stockpile?)

Hm, I'm not sure.
I use refuse stockpiles set to bones and shells near my craftsdwarf's shops but never used it for hair.
You could allow bins, thread can be stored in bins. I am not sure whether this will prevent rotting.

Considering I've not seen refuse pile accept spun hair thread at all, well... There're a whole bunch of other thing, I think refuse pile only accepts items worn to X. Hair threads goes in the cloth stockpile set to accept thread of any kind, there're no category for hair though.

Anything in refuse stockpile wears out, even if it's used for something else :D

I've seen this - which begs the question of which setting under cloth actually permits the hair thread?

!Science! anyone?

Either of plant threads being enabled have done it so far, it might be an concidence on my end. I've not had any luck with silk or yarn only stockpile. Having metal threads enabled get every possible threads piled into it last I tried it.

Care here AutomataKittay,

Do you run DFHack with DF?  Or running Vanilla

If Vanilla, there is a cloth stockpile bug which basically means the stockpile ignores settings and puts all cloth/thread in.  DFHack has a fix for this bug.
