Hmm. Having spent some time these past two weeks screwing around with the most recent 0.04 changes to CBM, I must conclude that CBM is not very well playtested. There are a couple of weaker nations out there that got nominal boosts that actually play out as nerfs, primarily because the combat AI doesn't know when or how to use (or more pointedly, stop using) certain spells they added. *sigh*

It's rather funny, when I think about it. While we were still deciding on a map, I generated my pretender over a hundred times in search of a specific title. I didn't find it.

When we had finally decided to pick Sharivar, I resigned myself to another session of generating the same pretender 50+ times in search of that one title.

I got it on my first try.

The waters about the quarries of the Basalt City churned day and night as her people toiled ceaselessly with the preparations for war. Their master had spoken, and none would dare fail Him in this: the Truth would be spread to the furthest reaches of Naerun. It was as if they had awakened from a dream, for no one could think or speak of anything but the coming crusade. Indeed, though it had been less than a moon since the Church had revealed His plan, all agreed that it was as if the time before the war had never existed. The people had heard the clarion call of the Truth, and had shaken off the ponderous cares of their own lives. That was another time, another life, swiftly fading into a hazy memory. What came before meant naught; 'tis the future that matters! It was to be war!

Still, in the pinnicles of the coral towers where the oldest of the Atlanteans learned the ways of sorcery, there were whispers. An Elder would pause in his recital, and the throng of students around him would watch nervously as he struggled to recall something. After dinner, when the wisest of the scholars would gather to study and debate, quarrels would break out over misremembered recent history. Plain facts would be heatedly disputed for hours, and then suddenly be agreed upon by all parties. Afterwards, no one would be able to explain how they had come to change their minds - or even what the disagreement had been in the first place. Something was not right. No one could say what, exactly, but everyone could remember when it had began.

On the day that the Matrons gathered the Ladies and Lords of Atlantis in the vast amphitheater overlooking the gorge in the center of the city, everyone agreed that the Queen spoke the Truth, but afterwards no one could remember exactly what she had said. They knew she had declared it time for the Basalt City to cease its selfish brooding, and again bring Truth and Balance to the squabbling tribes and principalities of Naerun. They knew that she had revealed the Holy Plan, and had spoke at length of how the companies of the Guard would execute the will of their divine master. All could even agree that at the end of her exhortation, when she led the gathering in a plea of supplication to Him, the darkness in the depths of the gorge had glowed cold blue, and the Lord of the Basalt City, Gnaghaut gik'Phell, Prince of Writing and Speech, Sword of Balance, and Commander of Truth, could be seen in the distance. These details everyone would recall. But the rest - why now, or even simply why - those explanations slipped through their fingers. Certainly, even the highest Mothers and Elders would not question the Matrons, nor demand explanations of the Church, but some did later whisper doubts to each other. Certainly, the Lord of the City had deigned to show His approval when He blessed the gathering with His presence. But if their mission was to spread the Truth, why could no one remember it?

The nobles had returned to their towers, troubled by their doubts, but in the days that followed they put these worries aside and applied themselves fully to preparations for war. The Elders returned to their Academy, likewise troubled, and likewise preparing for the long campaign to follow. But unlike their landed brethren, they could not let go of their doubts. Something had happened. They could not say what, nor even think about it without difficulty, but something had changed. Still, the moon waned, and soon it would be time for the Azure Banner to be carried forth once more. No amount of searching debate or lingering doubt could change that. With growing unease, the mages of Atlantis prepared for war.

It was then that the famed savior Bureaucrat, Jack Noir, descended from the heavens. Before he could proclaim his decrees, both of the Imperious Monarchs Imprisoned him into the depths of the Pile of Bureaucracy.
