The sea urchin? Or possibly the sea star, sea cucumber, or other echinoderm? Or the lionfish, stonefish, or some other kind of spiny fish? Or something else?

Not necessary per say but cool and useful. We also don't need to get  on land. Nor are we ready by any means. We are glorified flatworms at this point.

Not necessarily we don't have to become a sesial filter feeder totally dependent on our symbiont to live. it can just give us a secondary food supply for when times get rough
