Always nice to have to someone new with patience and the vigor to try DF. The gaming industry has shaped us into worse gamers, we need to hold on though.

Also be sure to check out Adventure Mode, a more roguelike part of the game (and less SimCity).
And IN MY OPINION, ASCII graphics give the best effect overall (so you don't get goblin forts shown as purple cabinets and whatnot).

Welcome to DF, and welcome to bay12 :D
Personally, i prefer ASCII, but again, that's just preference.
As for what makes the game fun, I'm sure you'll see for yourself ;)

I definitely recommend using a tileset/graphics pack. It's much better than ASCII, in my opinion. Really enhances the game experience :) Personally I recommend the Ironhand or Phoebus graphics, both of which come with the Lazy Newb Pack. Mayday and Obsidian are great too.

So far I have flooded one fortress and have had my whole colony go insane/bezerk and kill each other (that's what it seemed they were doing to each other)

To be honest, I haven't used a tile set yet but I am digging the way it is in it's original beauty.

Do you guys like making fortress above ground or digging them out?

That's just beginner's luck. ;)

I prefer digging.

I dig it out. Then I build a wall around the entrance and the surrounding area. Controls the direction anything entering my fort is coming from.

I eventually build my whole fortress far underground, then build a castle on top and an access tower there that leads to a platform high in the sky for me to catapult things from.

Gah the flooding of my fortress so my fault too, I was so dumb and not paying attention.  :'(

I Like that idea of building walls around the entrance to the fortress, very clever :)

"It is from their foes, not their friends, that cities learned the lesson of building high walls."
Also I would recommend having your military train above ground. That they they wont get cave adaption and vomit all over everything when they have to defend. Bonus of them already being up there to defend.

I dig first, then eventually build massive overground structures for the hell of it. Quite often labyrinth's, or massive crypts which have to be passed to enter the fort.

The forgotten beasts are randomly generated creatures. Most of them are very strong. This is one I found that should not be taken lightly!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Naw, that's a pretty easy one. It's made of meat (delicious, delicious meat) and it has to land an attack to use its special feature.

The ones you need to watch out for are made of stone or metal, or use AoE attacks. Webs are deadly for melee, but ranged attacks will take down webbers that aren't made of stone or metal. You should try and catch the webbers though -- FB silk isn't worth any more money than cave spider silk and doesn't have any special properties*, but it's so classy.

*You can change this, but the changes will be made to all procedurally-generated creatures.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I know I just had to share it cuz it is the oddest one I found so far. I am 100% sure that there are things weirder than giant, eyeless, croaking, belching chickens.
