What is this - Dwarf Fortress?
« on: July 17, 2013, 05:39:09 pm »

Hi all, I just recently heard about this game(today) and I googled to find out what the heck this game was. Upon finding the website It looked like a bunch of matrix code I was looking at until I took a closer look. The game looks... well.... rather intriguing to me to be honest.

Can anyone fill me in on what this game is, when was it in development, is it still being developed, and is it free? (I assumed it was free because I was allowed to just download it. By the way is taking for ever because of my slow a** internet.) - Oh and what makes this game keeping you coming back?

Tell me anything else you feel I should know. :)

Id say that it the following things that may keep people coming back: the procedural generation of worlds and history, the fact each game can play out different, video game cruelty potential, the Clowns, how advanced it is in several of its aspects, the intelligence of the dwarves, and more video game cruelty potential.

Check out the lazy noob pack for tile sets and utilities that might make getting started a bit easier on you.

If you're new to the game, this will be your bestest friend: the Dwarf Fortress Wiki. It covers everything from bugs in dwarven behaviour to how to build an efficient pumpstack.

If you ask a question about the game, and get a bunch of people saying "Do this!" mixed with people saying "No, don't listen to him!", it's probably better not to go through with it unless you feel rather confident in your knowledge of the game. There are some things the community tries to keep relatively quiet so new players can discover it for themselves, and generally if you're being cautioned against it, it has something to do with one of these.

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress! The most important thing to note as a new player is that this game has a learning precipice. You will have to learn to play for a good long while before you can really learn the game. Getting into Dwarf Fortress requires a lot of patience, and you can never win the game itself, so make sure not to get too frustrated by the complexity. If you need any help with something, just pop into this section and the community will be happy to help.

And here I thought the way to win the game was to lose in the most spectacular way possible.

There will always be a better way to kill everyone, especially if you include RAW modification.

in regards to development and price point: DF is free but toady accepts what ever little tidbits you may wish to send his way. It is still in active development but its pace of development is far slower than what you will normally be used to.

Thank you all for the responses. This seems like a fairly happy community, that doesn't strike down noobies. I got to play for about a hour or so far, must say I am kind of hooked. I am definitely using the wiki for my advantage to get my first fortress started though LOL

Do you guys recommend using skin mods to make it look different or should I stick with the beauty it was born into?

Start with ASCII at least to learn the graphics of the game. Later you may want to play with a tileset, but ASCII is the core DF graphics, and it works at least as well as a tileset.

What are your guy's personal preference? are the skins worth it? Or do they kind of take away from the game style of the game?

Same, although I often use ASCII as well.

The phoebus set has some hints that can make the game easier for newbies - it is easy to see the worth of some stone, metal, and gem varieties and they are a little bit more distinctive than in other tilesets.

Losing is fun.

If you want to see spectacular ways to have !FUN! in Dwarf Fortress, you could always read a few community stories.  Boatmurdered is my favorite!
