Buying Eggs For Hatching?
« on: July 17, 2013, 04:40:45 pm »

If I buy a giant cave swallow egg, is there any chance that it will hatch? The page on the wiki about eggs only mentions what happens if they're hatched and conceived within the fortress, but what if you buy one from a caravan?

It wont work. Because the mother isnt there to keep it warm. Once it is taken from the nest it will never hatch.

And this is why you need to make sure your dwarves are not able to gather the eggs you hope to hatch by either preventing them from entering the room/area, or by marking eggs forbidden.

I could swear there was a third option to prevent finely minced egg instead of hatchlings, but I can't think what it would be. (I really need to work in my bird raising in game.)

Yup, you can make them ineligible for meal prep via the Kitchen menu.

Though does that prevent the dorfs from removing the egg from the nest? Sure, it won't be cooked, but I think they're still moved to stockpiles, iirc.

The nest box behind door technique works best in my experiences. Just lock the door as soon as the female rushes in.

If you forbid the nestbox itself would that keep them from gathering any eggs from it? Since the eggs are technically inside the nestbox 'building'

Forbidding the eggs from stockpiles will keep them from being taken to them.

Locking doors can be dangerous if it is a wild animal. Like giant ostriches, or crocodiles or cave dragons.

Forbidding the building should force the mother off the nest. They certainly won't claim forbidden nest boxes.

You can either forbid the eggs inside the nestbox, or forbid in kitchen menu AND not set up in egg stockpiles, or keep the dwarves away from the nestbox. Unfortunately this also means keeping them away from the mother, as pets will not path through doors that are marked forbidden-but-pet-passable.
