My Firefox was all zoomed in
« on: July 17, 2013, 04:23:14 pm »

Guys this is not okay.
screenshot

Okay, here's how this happened:
I installed AdBlock Plus or whatever.
A while later, my touchpad stopped working, so I restarted the computer.
The touchpad worked again.
When I started Firefox, it said it was checking compatibility with add-ons; I think this was one step of a Firefox update, but I''m not sure. Didn't seem important.
And then it was all zoomed in.

I asked Google for help, which led me to check out "layout.css.devPixelsPerPx" in about:config. It was set at a default value of -1.0, which seems to be the same as 1.25. But 1.0 looks different than what I had before this mess.

So, does anyone know how to restore the original stuff?
I could modify the mentioned number until I get something reasonable, but that sounds neither enjoyable nor appropriate.
EDIT: Yeah that's not going to work because it makes thing uneven. Like,  tab text too small and page content and icons too big. Posting an example pic.
At 1.1

Zooming out normally makes the pages appear fine. BUT. The Firefox bars above or whathaveyou are still too zoomed-in: it's uncomfortable and the icons are unclear. I'd also like to be able to view pages comfortably at the default zoom. ctrl+0 is a lot easier than ctrl+0,ctrl+-,ctrl+-.

EDIT: I figure if it just happened suddenly there should be an easy fix, seeing that the old default worked fine.

Just checking: are you on your monitor's maximum resolution? That's the only thing that I can think of that would cause the firefox GUI to seem expanded.

Yep. Other programs are working exactly like they did.

Go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display

Put to smaller or 100%.

Nope, made things too small, Firefox and otherwise.

What does FF say you have loaded for Add-Ons?

Another solution might be to export your bookmarks and uninstall FF. See if a reinstall fixes it. Make sure to delete any temporary files or configuration settings w/e when Firefox uninstalls.

AdBlock Plus 2.2.4 is the only thing installed recently.
In case it helps, everything else is:
Appearance: Dark Fox
Plugins: Intel Identity Protection Technology 2.1.42.0, Intel Identity Protection Technology 2.1.42.0, McAfee SecurityCenter 11.6.505.0, Photo Gallery 16.4.3505.912, Shockwave Flash 11.7.700.224.

Disregard all of the above- I know exactly why this happened, because it happened to me too. And I have the solution!

Go to Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display

Put to smaller or 100%.

This guy knows what's up. Firefox recently made a really dumb update to sync its view sizes with your Windows settings, leaving many people who find Windows' default of 100% too small, with a blown-up Firefox and no way to find a happy medium.

The solution, sadly, means adding another plugin to your browser's repetoire. BUT, it will fix the problem 100%.

Step the First: Install the plugin NoSquint

-If your Windows setting is at 125%, set the Zoom to 75% or 80% in NoSquint. (I use 80%, looks exactly how it used to for me)

Step the Second: The above fixes webpages, but not Firefox's menus and UI. To do that, type this into your URL bar: about:config and put 'pix' in the filter search box. When you find "layout.css.devPixelsPerPx", change its value to 1.0.

There, fixed. It really pissed me off to install another plugin just to get rid of this dumb behaviour, but apparently it's "the way of the future!" and "this helps everyone with higher DPI monitors!" and somehow that justifies linking a browser's zoom to a completely unrelated system setting... Whatever.

Enjoy the fix.

Setting that value to 1.0 makes the bars similar to what they were, but not the same; I've already tried it. I'll try resetting right now, and if that doesn't work I'll try your solution in full. I can get used to a smaller toolbar set, but zoomed-in webpages aren't okay, so the NoSquint recommendation is undoubtedly helpful.

EDIT: Yeah, reset didn't help, so it's probably the sync thing.

EDIT2: Okay, here's the problem:
Setting that value to 1.0 makes the toolbar icons the right size. However, it makes the toolbar tabs and text a bit too small. This patchwork solution has fixed all but that. I'm checking out the Firefox Theme Font and Size Changer right now, but suggestions always welcome.

EDIT3: I think it's finally working correctly. Thanks for all the help.

Np, glad you could get it looking normal. Sucks that you had to use an additional plugin, though. Think Firefox is creeping into "fixing shit that ain't broke" territory lately...

My solution to this problem was to revert to a previous version: https://t.co/eok5Wdl80w

And of course to disable automatic updates on Firefox, but I did that ages ago.

So since the OP fixed his problems, are we free to start a browser war in the thread?

this never would have happened in Opera
