Am I being too picky with world gen?
« on: July 17, 2013, 01:52:15 pm »

I have a very specific set of parameters and conditions that I MUST see met when I gen a world. If they're not met, the world's no good to me.

I usually go for a 65x65 world, but I'll sometimes try 129x65 as well, occasionally even using 129x129 but not often.

Because I have a hardon for the spoiler tag and detest long-ass posts:

After countless rejected worlds, it occurs to me that maybe I'm being too picky about this. I'm spending more time looking for that perfect world to play in than I am actually playing the game. Am I being too specific in my demands for world gen's random nature, or do I need to start using larger maps? What do you think?

I do believe you are being too picky. I am the same with the game and it is my main impediment to play. I know it's hard to let go and accept something less than you wish, but it's best to make the effort as much as possible. I'm making very slow progress on the wide range of things that niggle me and I'm a happier player for it. Maybe eventually I'll be able to accept an embark that has a dwarf that likes penguin teeth.

We're all like that at times, but often its the worst suited sites/worlds that provide the bets stories.

Yeah, you're pretty picky. But world gen is a part of the game, somebody just enjoy creating worlds.

In my worlds (65x65), I want:

1. weak dwarves/few dwarves = few mountain peaks
2. lots of goblins = lots of evil areas
3. lots of civs (so it's more probable to get a war with elves)
4. enough megabeasts (easy by just making their count so large)
5. history of 200-700 years

My biggest two things are Ice in the north, at least one glacier/biome. I've been stuck on this one world seed, it has a really cool obsidian desert and a marble mountain where I got 20000 candy in a 3x3 embark. Sort of emotionally attached to that world.

I usually generate my world few times because the aquafiers are just everywhere and when i find a spot without them it doesnt contain metals and has very deep soil.

I don't want to turn off the aquafiers because i think that would reduce the maximum ammount of fun possible.

I rarely do advanced worldgen, mostly because I have no idea what I'm doing, but also because I like to have no control over the world I play in. I feel it feels more genuine etc., though if I don't get a name I like in my world I'll regen until the cows come home. "The universe of histories"? Fuck that.

Kolnukbyne, you can gen a world you like in regular world gen. Hit p to export the world gen parameters which will be located in \Dwarf Fortress Ascii\Dwarf Fort 34.11 directory.

Then go to \Dwarf Fortress Ascii\Dwarf Fort 34.11\data\init and copy and paste the world gen parameters to world_gen.txt file. From there you can modify things like the number of megabeasts, world sites, volcano numbers for advanced world gen.

There used to be a third party tool that allowed you to paint terrain/humidity/temperature/alignment, but it's not updated anymore, I think. It also made fiddling with the settings easy.

Actually, Perfect World is up to date and perfectly usable.

In my opinion, no. I generally go for extremely flat worlds with heinous amounts of mineral wealth and long histories. Additionally, I enjoy megabeasts everywhere and high savagery. Evil optional.
