Hunting Specific Animals
« on: July 17, 2013, 12:34:52 pm »

I was wondering if there is a way to designate specific types of animals for hunting, or at least to make some of them non-huntable? I'd rather not kill off all my peregrine falcons before i can capture them.

Not that I know of, but I think hunting with the military is more convenient anyway, personally.

This. Instead of enabling the Hunting labor on any dwarves, just draft those dwarves into a marksdwarf squad and send them to selectively pincushion creatures on the map. As a bonus, you can give them armor and send them against goblins conveniently as well.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

Oddly enough I've found my free roaming hunters do more damage to most of my enemies than my actual army. Maybe 2/3rds of my kills come from Urist McHunter and his crossbow wielding friends.

But yes, using the army to hunt is much better for selective hunting, though it does require some management while normal hunters just go and do their thing.

I get this. I've always assumed it's because the hunter is ambushing, so he gets a good few shots in, unlike the marksdwarves who go stomping in, then have to break and run when the goblins close the gap.

as mentioned before, military is the way to go when it comes to kill selection.

on a side note, make sure that the dwarf you want to use for this type of "hunting" has at least one level in a military skill and one in any civilian skill. this way you avoid negative thoughts (and possible tantrums) from constantly switching between military/civilian duties

I've thought it's because they effectively run very intricate patrol routes. They're spread out over the map, there'll always be two or three by the entrance (either coming or going) and they also know when to call it quits instead of running in and trying to bash an ambush full of lashers.

Wild animals also make better training than archery targets I think, so hunters often have very good skills when it comes to shooting a goblin in the eye. Most of my hunters can cripple/kill about 2-3 goblins before running and can cripple a semi-megabeast to the point it can't fight.

Having just watched my hunter squad go from 8 to 3 when caught out by a pair of goblin ambushes, I have to disagree with this general concept.  In general my hunters seem to be nothing more than tantrum risking ambush detectors who happen to supply meat and bone to the fortress.

Doesn't mean I don't use them for exactly that purpose though.  :D
