Does grass spread?

So I started digging out an area just underneath the surface, and accidentally breached a pond. It's still year 1 on this fort, so I'm gonna let it slide for now, and wall it all off later. Water spreads, yadda yadda, and a little while later I see grass start growing. Now I'm wondering, will this grass extend to areas that do not have direct access to sunlight (areas underground where the pond wasn't initially?

I assume not, but I'm just curious, and figure I'll check before I wall it off.

Yeah, I know about the cave moss once I breach the first cavern.

The grass won't spread to any non-lighted tiles, nor to any tiles that are neither soil nor muddied rock.

I wonder above grass spreading.
If you build a shelter above a totally sterile land, wall it and roof it, then channel, then irigate, will grass spawn?
I'm thinking about above-ground bunker-pasture in sterile biome.

Grass does not spawn, it is not some sort of vegetative amphibian. It should grow. If you channel 1zlvl deep into sand or soil, grass also begins growing even where it shouldn't, such as in a desert devoid of vegetation. It also allows you to grow grass without having to worry about saplings sprouting anywhere.
