well, that game lasted five minutes, up from the three my prior game lasted.  is there any better way to start than spending all your money on crew members?

it seems that tabbing out of the game (have it in windowed mode) when it is loading for the first time (begin game screen) it loads into the game directly, and when loading screens come up it displays the begin game text.

Not really, just remember to grab some fruit while you're at it.  3-4 crewmen, preferably as cheap as they come, and then start island hopping looking for an easy treasure chest or two.  Use that money to get more crewmen, and if you have the opportunity to get a cannon, cannoneer and bombs, then do so (not so much for the damage, but more the tactical advantage of having 1-2 enemies grapple on to your boat instead of you taking the fight to them), but that's most likely going to be much later.  Just focus on staying alive, getting enough food (if you can pick up a fishing pole, BY ALL MEANS GET IT.  It will supply you with enough fish to keep you set on just about any course, so long as you have a couple cooks to prepare the food), and trying to find easy targets.

If an island has tribals, don't touch it.

If the island has pirates that have equal or more numbers than you do, leave it alone.

If the island has dogs that outnumber you by at least 2, stay away unless you have very high level troops.

If you have 5+ pirates, or just 4 good ones, you can freely take on the 3-man boats that appear to make up the entirety of ocean encounters at this point.

so, I was forgetting to get food is the main thing.  the easy target thing I was learning, good to know that I was on the correct path at least

What purpose does the begin game text sequence serve?

I've wondered this since the first build we got.

It's a secret ;). In the final version there will be more questions, they fill in secret variables. YES that means secret bosses, ships, enemies, treasures and the like, but NO we will never say WHAT exactly.

That's what wiki's and wild rampant speculation are for!

So it will affect more what is out in the world, rather than say, your starting stats/attributes/etc? I prefer the former to the latter. I had envisioned the most recent event being "war" to shape the world as a more violent, lawless place. Even though I assumed it wasn't implemented yet or the correct interpretation.

I just assumed it had to do with determining what seed to use for building the world.

Do you set a destination via the map?

Alright, gave this a quick late-night spin, and here are a few first impressions...

Natives have been fixed, thank you!  They're still tough combatants, but they're not the blood-hungry demigods they used to be.  As in, it's actually possible to defeat them in battle, thus opening up a lot more of the islands to looting.

I personally still feel that shipbuilding blocks are just a bit on the expensive side, when you consider just how many of them you have to purchase in order to make any real customizations to your ship...  Weighed against how much time/difficulty is involved in gaining wealth, it just seems a bit limiting.  But I'll have to try a few more runs and have one last a bit longer before I say anything firm on this matter.

Until the early game gets tweaked so you have an easier time getting a character that will actually last for more than a few minutes, I think the worldgen questions are better off not being in the alpha versions, if only because it's currently more just an annoyance that slows down repeated testing.  Unless something gameplay-significant has already been implemented that deals with them, I don't think they're currently helping anything.  I remember sighing with relief last version when I realized I didn't have to wait through that anymore.

Cannons now cost a not-so-small fortune at around 1000gp each...  I suppose this sort of makes sense, but it does also mean that it will take quite a long time before the player gets a single cannon, one stack of ammo and a cannoneer to man the thing.  But considering the tactical advantage it provided last version, I don't really have that great of an issue with the price, other than that by the time you can afford it, you're already killing everything.

I think that's the main thing, there's no particularly easy way of getting your income going early on.  You have to spend all your money hiring troops just so you can survive the occasional ocean encounter, but you also have to get them enough food so that you all don't starve to death.  There are a number of items that make things easier for your economy (fishing pole, beds, cards), but those are all somewhat expensive and located in rare, randomized shops that normally mean you already have to have a veteran seafaring crew in order to make it that far.

Eh, I'm getting off the point, this is still just an alpha...  I'm still getting a lot of that one weird advertisement soundfile, particularly when arriving at destinations and the text starts showing up to tell you you've arrived.  Also ran into an oddity where the sailor suddenly stopped doing his job and didn't start in again until we'd made a couple stops.  It only happened once though, so I have no idea what triggers it.

Liking what I see so far...the alpha state is making me not want to buy it just yet (Though with no alpha I wouldn't have even looked at it so its not a bad thing) Can't wait to see it come together more...definitely on my watch list!

I thought I made that obvious when I said I reached the ocean screen. Yes I am stuck forever in the transition part, and my guys stopped getting hungry.
