You don't have to equip them yourself no, you can have a weapons cache in your ship and let them auto equip, or let them use preffered weapons, or equip them yourself

After watching the ACIV Trailer, I have a suggestion that probably would be meh

Throwing knives, and maybe have some concealed weapon type thing.

You and your crew have acquired the supplies to make their first journey to the Americas. Of course being pirates you don't plan on making an honest living. You wish to plunder the booty of your victims and cause chaos. You have outiftted your crew with concealed knives in the place of swords and throwing knives in the place of guns.

While many would consider this a bad choice for your career, you have a plan for how you would plunder. As you are plotting your first move, a crew member informs you that they spotted a ship off the port bow. A grin appears on your face. You tell him to go and get the crew prepared for their attack. You signal to the ship and after a few minutes of waiting, it arrives and, as you weren't known at the time, the captain of that fine vessel comes onto your ship, two guards with blackpowder rifle and a sabre each flanking him.

After some idle chatter and updating your maps with information he gives you, you give the signal for your first mate to get the crew to battlestations. The captain is confused at your gesture, but he ignores it. This is what will bring his demise.

You go to give him a hand shake, and as you bring your hand closer you ram your fist into his stomach and his guards react accordingly. They draw their sabres and prepare to fight you. Their mistake. Your guards immediately drive knives into the guards and now this captain is alone and unprotected, ripe for ransom taking. The sound of guns and screams soon erupt as your crew boards the enemy ship, taking the unprepared crew by surprise.

After the fight is over with few casualties on your side and the entire crew of the other vessel either killed or captured you lock the captain in the brig, stationing your guards there.

Okay, that's a lie. Just want to ensure that scurvy is a thing :p

That brings up an interesting point actually.
If we capture a ship, how could that be handled? The game could just automatically give you a choice to either switch to that ship or loot and disassemble it. On the other hand, the game could have support for fleets, which, in my own humble opinion, would be fucking sweet.

will there small lifeboats for boarding parties? ie while your ship is taking out the cannons you can send in 20-30 pirates to get control of the ship.
