I'm trying to avoid simply posting "in!", so here's a question:

Have you been doing any testing on lower-end computers? Intel integrated graphics cards in particular? If you've never been unfortunate enough to use one, you'd be surprised at just badly they can run any modern games.

Yea, onboard graphics cards are the bane of "Minimum system requirements". 

I was thinking, what kind of damage effects are the ships susceptible to?  Is there any overall health bar for the entire ship, or can you visually see damage from a cannon shot on each affected hull square?  Are leaks going to be a threat to your ship? 

So many possibilities.  You guys are doing an amazing job with your interaction here too btw.

As to answer your question, there is HP Bar for every part of your hull. Thats the only confirmed detail right now.

Like VisionShift, what will the damage be shown? Maybe have it be where you can lose a big part of your bow, and due to that your crew will be unable to crew as much of them on that part without causing instability

Regarding the ship damage, well, it's secret right now, but let's just say we want to make it as rich as possible, nothing generic, no hp systems and definitely not a life meter!

Your ship CAN and WILL sink, in different parts, and certain areas WILL be rendered unstable and unusable unless you get someone to fix it PRONTO.

Oh, and all this with 20+ enemy pirates attacking you, the enemy ship pelting you with grape shot and your mast tearing apart at the seams.

LOSING IS FUN!
