How to bring back the dead?
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:39:07 am »

Question: One of my favorite dwarves died, and, yes it's cheating, but I'm still a newbie at this game, so I'm asking:
Is there any method to bring a dwarf back from the dead just as he was in life?

You could possibly call in a necromancer or some other dark magic user.
The dwarf should be mostly the same besides the drooling, rotting flesh and occasional cannibalism.

If you use DFHack there are a few ways to do it.  There are a few examples posted in the DFHack thread (it's now under the 3rd party utilities subforum under the modding forum I believe), though you'll have to search for them.  I don't have specific examples on hand, but it's generally going to involve adding a DFHack script that resets the dead flag then abuses werecurses to heal the dead dwarf.

If you hadn't already genned the world, an alternative would be to add a resurrection interaction.  I'm pretty sure it's possible to create one that restores a creature to normal life, though getting around missing limbs would be tricky.  It would probably require abusing werecurses too.

Also, if he died during this DF session and you still have the world loaded (and no autosave has triggered since his death), you could savescum. Killing the game's process will prevent it from saving.

Yes, it's greasy and you lose your work since your last save, but you say you're good with cheating, so there's that option.

It's less "bring him back from the dead" and more "like he never died", but hey.

If the forumites scare him away, he's not ready for the game.

Children you rescue shouldn't behave like rabid beasts.  I guess your regular companions shouldn't act like rabid beasts either.
I think that's a little more impossible than I'm likely to have time for.

you are probably right about that, but the forums can be pretty scary at times. :-\

My question is, what was the cause of death?  If the dwarf just died of old age then bringing him back isn't going to "fix" things, or at least not for long.  If it was another case of "WTF were you thinking, Urist?!" then it might help, however. ;)

Yes, it's possible, but extremely complicated and more of an ongoing research project than a newbie-friendly tool. There's a lot of discussion, mostly on the dfhack thread.

Probably it's better, as a new player, to start emotionally preparing for dead dwarves than to risk corrupting your save game by hacking away at the memory to bring one back.

Sacrificing 100 goblin souls and several barrels of cat blood to Armok while chanting "Gatal nazush nom. Rash Sobir." Armok willing, may revive the dwarf in question. That chant actually has meaning in the Dwarven language. "Ageless blood god. Death release."

The problem with this ritual is the philosophical, and possibly practical, division over the line "Rash Sobir" means "release him from death" or "give the release of death".  One side being true, and your beloved beard-carrier returns the the living. The other, and the participants in the ritual join him in eternal slumber.

It's always been my experience that Armok is capricious and greedy, and always chooses the second interpretation of the chant.

Usually, he does this with an eruption of really hot melted rock from underneath the altar, which consumes all live within the room, and even many of the engravings on the temple floor, before retreating back beneath the ritual ediface.

I somehow doubt that "freeing FROM death" is something he really cares too much for, and prefers to cause, and intensely manifest a hunger for the latter instead.

I sometimes question the devotion to armok, but have considered weaponizing him. ;)

Ya never know. He might bring the dwarf back to life. Knowing he will immediately go into a mood and go berserk and put that candy sword to work on the fort. The circle of life my friend.

If you haven't saved, savescum by control alt deleting to windows manager and force closing the application, if you have saved, there is something in dfhack, but I have no experience with it.
